If it's right-hand drive, and says GT on the back grab it 'cause it's a J-Spec 12aT.
If it's LHD, then you'll have to pop the hood to figure out what kinda crack the guy was smokin' to put a GT tag on his car.

GTX would be the 12at i believe...my Savannah GT is NOT turbo...and it is factory original from japan...Unless they made some of the regular GT's turbo? Either way...my 78 has the regular 12a...same as the US spec unless i'm mistaken, if so please enlighten me!
from what ive seen on the net this is probably a '78 ...and no its not an aftermarket badge. ill try and get some pics next time i head down there. its in pretty **** condition, various coloured panels (some just primer) etc. but yeah ill get pics. might even offer the owner 500 AUS for it if it turns out to be any good :P

hmmm... Well I apoligize, you would be surprised how many idiots are out there. If the quarters are rusted out to bad I wouldnt touch it. But then again, I'm the guy who bought a 7 from a junkyard to keep it from being crushed
I then had to sell it not to long after I got it running lol. I should have kept it as a DD...

No Aussie RX-7 had a model badge only three RX-7 badges, certainly GT is an added badge possibly from a local Ford or imported ricers who loved the designation which should have meant Great Trash. There were limited edition RX-7 models with a two tone paint finish being the easy give away.
There was a GT model in Japan with the badge on the left of the trunk lid. It was the base model and the vast majority were 12 A engined. The GT-X was the next trim model up and a few after September 83 had the 12AT from the Cosmo, as did the top of the line SE Ltd. Adding the 12AT engine was a domestic marketing ploy in the dying days of the Gen 1 when sales dropped as it was common knowledge the Gen 2 was about to come out with the 13B. Other attempts of producing special editions were also relatively unsuccessful. The RX-7 was not a popular car in Japan even when it first came out, and more than 95% were exported.
Out of interest the correct designation is 12A not 12a as the Japanese language has no lower case. The use of 12AT was a marketing tool for the 12A with a turbo and efi, and does not appear in any engineering department document. Adding an aftermarket turbo to a 12A does not make it a 12AT, certainly there is no such thing as a 12aT either

trust me, if you saw the state of this car and the owners you know they wouldnt bother with fake badges, also the GT badge looks identical to all the GS badges etc on other 7s and its on the left of the boot (trunk) lid. plus just about every RX here is an import, mines an import from the USA, so theres no reason why this didnt come from japan.
Every RX-7 is an import apart from the few sold on the Japanese domestic market!
If its a rhd and you say it was imported fom the USA, the logical explanation is that it was bought by a US serviceman in Japan as a jdm GT model, taken back to the States then because there was no demand for a rhd, re-exported to Australia.
If this is the case, it will have Savanna badges, the rear will have glass straight across with a moulded lower body space for the number plate if its a 1982 or later jdm model [unlike the Aussie version] and side mirrors on the wings not the doors.
The manufacturer's build date will be in Japanese with no Australian ADR compliance plate.
The GT model was introduced in March 78 as the third of four trim optionsand the front looks like an Aussie S1 model with the 12A 4 port engine and drum rear brakes. Later it had a 6 port engine and a few from Sept 83 with the 12AT; the upmarket GT-X and SE Ltd were more likely to have a 12AT than the then base grade. I am aware that in the late 80s a few early GTs were modified with a second hand 12AT from an early Cosmo automatic car when their value significantly declined, but this can be checked easily as no boost gauge was fitted .
If, as you think, its a 79 model[78 build date] and in good condition it could go for Aus$3,000 but check Carpoint for a trade valuation, or the Ausrotary. com website for private sales.

By import he means non factory import, in Australia loads of cars were imported privately until the Govenrnment changed the rules on importing second hand cars a few years ago, that's how most GTRs, GTiR, Silvias, and many FD and TT 300Z were brought into the country legally at a much lower price.
