What is the black can shaped thing

under the air cleaner. It seems to be hooked up to the lower engine block by a hose, then goes to what looks like a filter then this large can object then the hose ends at the base of the radiator. Its not hooked into anything by the radiator either. Just wondering if I realy need it or not.

No, I moved that to the strut tower. Its the piece that is under the Air Cleaner. Its a little bigger then a fosters can.

That is the air sliencer. Air is provided from the air pump and goes into the ACV. That air is then diverted to either the cat and/or exhaust port. Any remaining air goes through that sliencer and discharges into the atmosphere. It just quites it down. If you have the air pump removed, then it has no purpose. You could take it off anyway, it won't hurt anything, but the sound of the air discharging directly from the ACV may be annoying.

How loud would it be about? I mean the motor and exhaust would muffle it?

Thanks

Why don't you just pull off the hose where it connects to the ACV and try it out? I don't think that the sound is too bad, but you should check for yourself to see what you think. I have mine still on. To me the added noise isn't worth the weight savings, but you may think different.

It's loud. Seriously.

I was thinking the same thing while I was in there working on my CAI, and figured 'what-the-hell' and pulled it out. After starting the car up, I was surprised to find out that it sounded like a lawn mower under deceleration, and was damn loud at the front end. It was so loud that it made me embarassed to decelerate around anyone who I thought might be watching.

Thus, I pulled out my 14mm wrench and put the damn thing back in. Problem solved. Notice, too, that there is a rubber hose with a 90 degree bend in it that goes out to the front of the radiator - this is there as additional sound direction so that it doesn't reverberate in the engine bay.

Try it, you may like it. I didn't.
