What is Better RB exhaust or Custom

Ok so I got a RB header for my 12a fb. Now I've heard and read that the stock cats won't take the heat and burn up. What would you recommend to me for an exhaust system. My engine will probably remain stock till I get a better job. My car just passed CA emissions. What diameter piping should I get? Straight piping or should I get highflow cat? any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Since you still have to deal with emissions, I'd get the bonez high flow cat. If you want a good tone without the "tinny" noise, I'd run a RB muffler, with possibly a custom pipe from the cat to the muffler. I would also think about running pre-silencers as well.

did you not read the post right above yours? you should follow those instructions unless you would like to go deaf and have every law enforcement agent in your town knowing you on a 1st name basis by writing you tickets

forgot to ask. Isn't the pre silencer a replacement for the cats? or does it go after or before the cat? thanks for your time

The presilencer is made to fit onto the end of the header. I would assume that you could place a cat behind that. I have the full system, and it sounds great (no cats though).

lol...

To answer the thread name question, it all depends on what this car is going to be used for. If the car is going to be a street car the full RB system is a good choice (as long as you don't need to pass emissions) or if your crazy and like to get noise polution tickets use the RB header, to straight pipe to a resonator, then to a straight-through muffler.

I currently have the RB setup and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to have a stock looking setup that is very streetable. But the issue has come up before that the RB muffler is actually quite restrictive. Bottom line is rotarys are loud, and burn insanely hot compared to there piston counterparts. In order to quite the exhaust down you need a heavy duty muffler and the Powerpulse Racingbeat muffler seems to deliver. But at the same time I have not tried a straight through muffler design but I know that it is alot louder then the RB system...

I did have a 2.5" custom exhaust from the manifold. It was quite loud, especially above 4k. Inside the car, probably as much noise as having your windows down at 65-70mph. Very annoying interstate driving.
I've since installed a dynomax cheapo muffler inline with the magnaflow at the rear. It was heaps better and had a very good tone for the first week or so. After that it became louder but a lot better than before. Maybe I have $200 total into my exhaust system.. Only factory part is the manifold.
When I was carbed me and jorx81 raced several times. The cars were very even, but after the dynomax inline muffler, above 70 the accelleration died off faster..

I run a custom exhaust and it's loud, it also depends on personal taste. I don't mind it, I kind like the loud muffler and the sound of the engine going higher and higher into RPMs but then again I get tailed all the time by cops. I just went to court to fight a ticket (WON!) but the annoyance of flipping on the hazards and pulling over or pulling into a gas station isn't fun. So keep in mind what your tastes are.

I've got a full RB setup with headers, and I love it, but it is definitely not going to help you with emissions. Just sitting at stoplights I can practically feel my brain cells dying from the fumes.

Every once in a while I like to hear the sound of sound of straight pipes, so I take off the muffler and drive down the street to the gigantic parking lot at my church and tear it up for a few minutes. Just long enough to avoid the cops who come to find out what's making all the noise. Oh yes, they WILL come, you can hear it for miles This is why I'm saving some cash to buy an electric exhaust cutout.

Actually, the presilencer should be placed just before the muffler. That's what racing beat does. 2 are placed just before the muffler, before it y's into the muffler. (Remember, RB goes from 2 into 1 into the muffler)
