change up to a ford rear end.....grannys speed shop would be the best place to go for rear end solutions on the 1st gen rx7.

yep, could do a 8.75" or 9" ford, but i'd go with the hilux, theres alot around, cheaper in most caes too, and plenty of ratios to choose aswell, and they aren't as big as a 9", so less fabrication needed

we did this to my mates car, we had to carefully measure the postion of all the mounts on the standard diff, cut the mounts CAREFULLY, remove the ones off the hilux, and weld them onto the hilux to suit the standrad measurements. But all this was done after having the hilux diff housing and axles shortened to suit standard measurements, and having the axles redilled to suit the mazda stud pattern, otherwise it'd be too wide for the mazda. This whole job does involve a little faffing round, but being picking and precise with the measureing and welding pays off, coz when we went to fit it to the car, all the arms lined up perfectly

Its worth it

I hope you are modding this motor and you`re not just swapping it in. For the price, power and weight difference with a T2, or any other turbo rotary engine it hardly seems worth it considering all the modifications you will have to do. Don`t get me wrong, I love RB engine`s, I just hope you are ready for alot of hard labour, and many hours tweaking, grinding, and swearing. lol Good luck!

I see your point, but Rb25's are real strong motors. Doesnt take much at all to make an easy 350 to the wheels, and have it last forever. Itll take a lot to shoehorn it in, but once he does, that car will stomp most anything into the dirt, and do it for the next 10 years.

But what is this about a Hilux diff? As in, Toyota Hilux? basically a Surf with a truckbed, yes? We have the Surf in america, as the 4runner. Is that diff an easy swap? I dont think Ive ever heard of that swap.

Hope you get it going since it would likely be a killer ride once your done; however, if cash and time aren`t a problem you should swap in an rb26 drivetrain. Wow, awd rb powered fb, now that would be something.

GSS makes parts conversions for rx7's so putting a 8.8 or 9" in doesnt involve as much fabrication as you think. Yes it is more expensive...but he's building an rb25 fb...why not spend some money on the rear end & rear suspension to get it to launch.

I have the diff out of a 1980 Toyota van (called "Hiace") in my S1. It's the same diff as the hilux/pickup use. 8" diff and 30 spline axels. Overall lenght was 20mm longer than the stock item (no shortening needed). Bolt pattern for the RWD diff is 5x114.3. I just ordered a detroit locker for mine. A lot of different ratios available. Mine is 4.375:1.

so your saying the hiace diff will bolt straight in no mods needed??? and to all the other people my engine is a rb25 but i have the holden vl commodore bottom end wich is a 3L so my engine is not a 2.5 anymore its a 3L so there is alot more power and i have adjustable cam gears, stage 2 cams, arp head studs, cometic head gasket, ported head, high mount turbo manifold, T70 turbocharger, after market inlet manifold, 100mm throttle body, front mount, 4 inch exhaust and haltech computer so yeah its going to go crazy gotta love it cant wait till its done its just money slowing me down

You cut the stock mounts off the rx-7 diff and weld them on to the toyota diff.
