Well thats what it IS, but why its THERE I have no clue!

Perhaps the RX-7 gurus will know this, as the 1st gen exhaust that i've seen is way different.

Sorry i cant be more help, but i got that pic out of the victoria british catalog.

Well, I wouldn't do anything with it unless you know for sure what exactly it's purpose is for and why's it's closed and what not.

I'm a dumb *** so I can't say anything to help you out. heh, sorry.

thats the cool air pipe that is ment to hook up to your cat.. it sends cool air to the cat because the rotary exhust to too hot and the cemical reaction with the catalists in the cat wont work, so it needs the cool air.

but looking at the picture it looks like u dont have that first cat in there? so it has just been blocked off

if u havent got the cat then u dont need that pipe

but if ur cat is still there and the pipes not going to it. then i think it could do some damage to the exhaust

scrutch:

Your car looks like a SA series as was sold in the states from 1979-1980, which had no catalytic converter. Instead, they used a thermal reactor (see diagram at link https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...5&pagenumber=2 and download "header2.jpg")

It looks like they closed off the tube that carries the thermal reactor cooling air to the rear of the car. (the tube is coming from the front of the car, and going toward the rear, if I'm seeing it right) If you have a stock emission system that is otherwise functioning properly, this tube needs to be open to allow the hot air that circulates inside a jacket around the thermal reactor, to escape, or the thermal reactor could overheat, causing it to crack, or maybe create engine overheating problems.

Try to find it on the diagram of the emission controls on the page at the above link. I hope this helps!

oh yes, i think you have centered the question , thanks, have you any idea on what can i use to reopen it? or who ? , its a hot resistence tube, i donno how can i open it.. i think the only way its to cut him .. right? cut where its closed...

I'M REALLY DISGUSTED OF THE MAZDA OFFICIAL CONCESSIONARY IN ITALY, they are all sucker, they close me the tube without say me nothing.. and they have me ask a lot of money ! **** guys!

Yeah scruch, i got tired of having people like this work on my cars all the time.

So i learned how to work on it myself. It saves you A LOT of money when you repair it yourself!

The pipe looks pretty mangled, I suppose you'll have to cut it, and clamp on an extension, to divert it away from the floor, or anything else that doesn't like heat. I think the section this normally bolts to runs back near the muffler. What happened to that part of it?

The air coming out of that pipe won't be very hot, I remember being able to put my bare hand over the end of it and barely feeling anything coming out of it. Air flows from the air pump around the outside chamber inside the thermal reactor, if that makes any sense at all.

I'd cut it just infront of where the Mazda people mangled the pipe, it should be fine until you get full exhaust. You are getting full exhaust at some point right? C'mon, do it. Good luck man.
