lol, another, "odd noise emitting from the rear" thread. I just made one. Yours seems to be different though.

I had the same noise on my car. Rear drum set-up, not disc. When I took the passenger side drum off it was full of fluid, unfortunately it wasn't brake fluid, it was rear end dope (gear oil). Apparently the seal had blown and I drove the rear end dry... SMOKED IT!!!! ouch.

I ended up finding a donor car with a LSD rear end with disc brakes. Did the swap. Swap is very easy. If you swap to rear disc you need the master cylinder too.

hope this helps

MadDuck, I have the EXACT same issue right now, and hope to have the same solution as soon as i find a GSL rear end. However, my question is did yours eventually "fail" if so, what happened?.. I have been riding around for 3 months with a new seal and no new leak but, clunk, clunk, clunk from the rear end.
tnx

I had a noise kinda like that.... I would have described it as a (clack clack clack), it was from one of the brake pads (side shims installed wrong).

You know that you can put the car on jack stands and run it. Then you can look around to find the noise. Just don't crawl underneath the car.

correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it not recommended to run the car w/ no force/friction on the rear wheels at all? Even a dyno supplies some small amount force from the rollers...

Then I guess you go from the gas pedal, straight to the brake pedal without ever coasting?

I'm getting a fresh noise coming from my trans. It only makes it in fifth, kind of a grindy noise, goes away on accel (any acceleration) and decelleration but with with just cruise you can hear it.

It doesn't matter if there is a load or not, nothing is going to get hurt while just running it with the wheels off the ground.

True nothing will get hurt, just make sure you use "jack stands" and don't just trust a jack with the wheels spinning (yeah, I know it's obvious, but we do have some young readers here)

Cool

I had that same kinda noise from my 85 gsl-se. Jack up the car take the tire off and see if the calipers are loose enough to move back and fourth (with no ebrake on of course) that is what is causing your noise. I got rid of the noise by adjusting the ebrake at the axle. Got mine just right no clackity clack and not too tight that the brake rubbs.

It's okay. I started the break in process on the new bridgeported motor running it on jack stands.

If the sound goes away when you apply the brakes it sounds like they're dragging to me.

if you have drum brakes, it could be rust build up in the drums...
