Talking Welp.... she's mine!

At ~11:00AM MST, weighing in at ~2575lbs, the 85 Black GSL-SE is now MINE! w00 h00!

I'm so stoked! She is in such nice condition (I'll get some good pics and do up a web page in the next couple of days) and not only that. The owner had the original manual, original broacher from 1985, the import book, and the "Illustrated Mazda Buyer's Guide (by John Matras) and "Sports Car Color History Mazda RX-7" (by Matras) that he gave to me. All in PERFECT condition.

My first chore (besides driving it home ) is to get it to pass emmissions and then register it! Yes... I live in AZ w/ BAD emissions laws

What would you guys suggest to get it to pass.... new oil (what kind and do I add MMO? how much?) what spark plugs? (if I were to do new wires what are the best?) diff air filter? (I want to do a WAY better setup on the air intake but I just need to get it registered for now!) Maby the MMO treatment? I need to get this thing to pass quickly because it needs to be registered! If I jack it up and take the cat(s)? off what do I look for? Tempted to do the alcohol treatment but on such a beauty I donno if I want to risk it.

TIA
Chris...!

Use NGK plug type BR8EQ-14 if it's stock. Any kind of wire should work, When I first got my 7, I put Bosch wires on it. I forget what kind of cap and rotor went on, but any should work.

For the oil, everyone here likes Castrol GTX 20w50. Four quarts of that plus a quart of MMO works. Everyone says Fram filters suck, but I've never seen conclusive evidence on that. Just to be on the safe side, CarQuest filters are just re-labeled Wix, which people do reccomend. (Then again, no conclusive evidence.)

Just make sure you have a clean air filter if you're gonna change your intake setup. If not, go with a K&N...

For a fuel filter, Puralator makes one thats clear so you can see how dirty it is. (Not sure about one like that for the SE.) You can never replace your fuel filter too often.

MMO/ATF treatment goes as follows:

1.) Remove old sparkplugs.

2.) use a turkey baster to inject some MMO or ATF into the spark plug holes.

3.) turn the engine over slowly (use a ratchet or you may even be able to crank it by yanking the belts.) one full rotation.

4.) repeat 2-3 a total of three times.

5.) Put the old plugs back in and let it stew for 24 hours.

6.) make sure the car is outside and away from people, animals, dwelling areas, etc. Crank it up and wait for the smoke to clear.

7.) go highway driving, pull some redline runs, blow all the MMO/ATF outta the system.

8.) change to new spark plugs as the old ones are fouled.

Ok.... went shopping and got a bunch of new stuff... the only thing I couldn't find (and can probally get at BAP) were the NGK plugs. I pulled my old plugs and the bottom ones were dark brown/black and the top ones were whiteish/brown. I was able to get some autolite plugs but they only have the 1 prong instead of 4. Will these do for emissions or should I search around town to get the NGK's? (prob will do this anyways). I got a new airfilter, oil filter, 2 quarts of MMO, 4 quarts of Castrol GTX 20w50, new cap and rotor, new wires, fuel filter and some Guarantee pass emissions additive.

I plan on replacing this all in the next day or so but I have a couple questions first.

Should I seriosly consider doing the MMO treatment now? or wait till after I try emissions? IF I were to do it now what plug holes do I put the MMO in? and how much MMO. When you say a full rotation could I use the yellow mark on the pully to mark a FULL rotation? Should I burn up the old NGK's in there afterwords or use the autolites I got and then replace them w/ new NGK's?

TIA... Chris.

Get the NGK's... Autolites suck... That $5 per plug is well worth it.

Return the box of Autolites to pay for one or two of the NGK's.

If the car runs now, just use the existing plugs for the ATF/MMO treatment.

I have no idea whether it is best to do the ATF/MMO treatment before or after an **** probe as I only got to put my car through one, right after I got her running. (Barely passed, but for other reasons. Damn previous owners )

See what she'll do as is. I dunno how it is round your way, but here, if you fail, retest is a dollar if you do it within a week.

Here is AZ (if it hasn't changed) it's free if you do it w/in like 2 weeks or somthing. I'm gonna call around and find some NGK's. When I was at checker they said they would be $9.99 each special order but I'll see what I can find. only question I have left before I try this MMO treatment is how much do I put in? and in which sparkplug hole? and the full rotation question.

I'll also do some searching on the forum for MMO and see if I can find my answers there... thanks a bunch for your assistance!

Yeah Smog testing sucks. I bought my sticker. Still waiting to get stopped see if it was worth it. Its still good for one more year so we'll see what happens.

when you do a search for the atf/mmo treatment. I wouldnt suggest using the explanation given at mazspeed. I used it but either i did something wrong or the way its written its not the best.

If you find a thread started by me about the atf treatment youll see why im saying this.
