Welding the Rear Diff

I did a search on this, but it seemed all the questions were "should I?"... I think this is a new one.

How many of you have welded the rear diff in your RX-7? Did you have the pumpkin out of the car completely, or were you able to do it without removing the pinion? My goal is to be able to do it without taking the pumpkin off of the car, just very carefully open it up, weld the gears, clean it out, and close it back up. I have yet to pull the pumpkin off of the car though, so I don't know if this will be possible (some cars it is, some cars it isn't).

Before anyone jumps in and tells me not to weld the diff (), the car is being modified for rallycross use, on a budget. I think it'll end up being a really interesting project, and I have a lot of work planned for over the holidays (parts are on the way!) and the first race is January 10th, so in January, I'll probably start a thread describing what we're doing to it.

You have to remove it from the housing. No access any other way.
