Weird thing happening.... mechanic can't figure it out?

I've got a 1984 GSL-SE that I've had for 6 1/2 years now and it's started doing this weird thing. It kind of surges and hesitates whenever I have to slow down at all. If I'm accelerating it doesn't seem to be as bad. It almost feels like there's a plug in the gas line and as soon as I let my foot off the accelerator it bucks/jerks/bunny hops. Sorry, really hard to describe. I took it into my mechanic, who specializes in rotaries, and he ruled out the fuel pump, filter, and air flow meter, but can't figure out why it's doing that. And, he charged me $90.00 to tell me that, but that's another story

Anyone got any other ideas of what it could be? I tried using a better grade of fuel; didn't help. It continues to get worse. And, it's particularly prominent in lower gears 1 and 2. Any thoughts?

Check your TPS, ignition timing and vacuum advance.

Okay, I've written that down and will take it back to the mechanic. Thank you both very much!

I once had two vacuum lines that had pinholes in them, it did the exact same thing.

TPS would cause a bad idle though...how is your idle? Maybe a bad ground some where?

My guess would be that TPS adjustment will nail this one. Please post back with whether that fixed it or not.

Also, don't let the mechanic charge you for a new one - it's only an adjustment. If he thinks a $90-120 part is going to fix it, guess what...? that part has to be adjusted too when it's installed!

Good luck with it,

Yep. My car had this problem too, once. Not enough to screw up idle, but low speed/decel, it would buck. Just a quick adjustment of the TPS and everything was good again. Probably was only about 1/8 turn out of adjustment.
