Weird Problem

I have a S1 with a 13B in it, with a Nikki carby. Driving home tonite on an empty street i thought i would open her up, launched pretty crappy and gunned it to 6k put it in 2nd, floored till 7k and put it in 3rd and kept on flooring it till about 5.5 - 6k when power died, not completely but dramatically with a weird noise fromthe engine bay (i would say the carby). It sounded similar to a farting noise (under the armpit kind), i put it in 4th and it did the same thing, 5th was fine.

This is the 2nd time this has happened to me in the year or so i have had this car. Both times when flooring it through the gears, i floor the car quite often but and it is fine right up till 7 - 7.5k (not game to take it any higher) and it has been fine, especially with the high flow air filter.

Could this be a lack of fuel problem, fuel pump not keeping up or something?

I would be really grateful for any ideas of what it could be, as it would be nice to hae a realiable car if a little V8 needs lesson in rotraies.

I wuold guess fuel starvation. Check your filter, and also check to make sure that your pump is actually keeping up. What pump do you have? My car did that last night actually, but it was cause I as so low on gas . I still beat the damn Honda over the line and up to 50 (the posted speed limit ), even with the fuel starvation halfway through 2nd. I couldve slaughtered him, but I just beat him instead. Oh well .

The fuel filter was replaced approx 1 month ago. I don't know what fuel pump it is, i bought the car with the engine coonversion done, but going over the receipt for the conversion they did not replace it so it is quite likely it is the stock one, 1980 SA.

How can i test to see if the pump is keeping up?

Why does it only happen when it is being floored through multiple gears?

Buy a fuel tee, a little fuel line, and a fuel pressure meter. If the pressure drops, then you know your pump isn't keeping up.

Third and fourth is where the most load is being placed on the engine, so naturally its where it consumed the most fuel, and creates the most power.

Thats what i mean i floor it in 3rd and 4th all the time right up to 7k in 3rd sometimes and it has never happened then, only when draging.

I will buy a fuel pressure metre anyway and see what it says

Thanks

When you get a fuel pressure guage, run a long hose to the tee so that you can tape the guage to your windshield where it is visible while you drive. Then punch it up through the gears while you observe the fuel pressure under load conditions.
