Was just looking at paint for that app today...

Worse comes to worst, you could pull the airbox and use a propane torch to burn the crap out... but that's pretty extreme.

Here is a picture of an air cleaner that I repainted with Ford Blue engine paint. Just put a piece of masking tape over the lettering and spray everything else. The paint is actually close enough that when you pull the tape off the letters you can't even tell that the rest has been repainted.

Doing this allows you to keep the white lettering on your air cleaner, and still have fresh paint too. I used the same paint color on the strut bar too...

Back to the original subject. Frank (nobodymv) left my housean hour ago. He had the same goo in the airbox. His car was stalling when he let off the gas and idling funny. We were preparing to run down David Lane's idle problem list when he showed me the air cleaner box. I'm kicking myself for not taking pictures. The rubbery sticky black goo had melted off of several air filters and had run down into his air flow meter causing the little door to barely move. There were actually puddles on the bottom of the cleaner box. I couldn't believe the car was idling at all let alone driving around town. We were able to clean most of it off with lots of paper towels and thinner. He decided to use a spare afm I had and took his home to soak overnight. Just as we were finishing my buddy (who owns a local import shop) stopped by to pick up a part from my junk yard We were telling him what we found and he said he sees it often. Apparently lots of the aftermarket filters do this.
