Got an 84 GSL, with a 12A. Been hearing this awful grinding sound coming from the alternator, thought it was going bad. Took to autozone they checked and said it was fine. The guy said it may be my water pump going out, anyone every have this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

 

The only thing I have experienced in a water pump going out is when mine started going it leaked out the shaft/bearing area.(bearings went out)

 

If you suspect the water pump, stop driving it NOW! Just a little overheating will kill a rotary pretty quick.... or so I've heard Good luck!

 

Water pumps are cheap and easy to replace.

I did mine on my DSM last weekend. Horrible, horrible job. I would have been so much easier if it were RWD. then its just right out in front.
Anyway, on the one I replaced, with out warning, it siezed up.

 

I have a spare...

 

get a mazda water pump, there a little more than your auto zone but will last much longer.
