water-air oil cooler

water-air oil cooler

I was wondering the other day if it would be a good idea to bypass the heater hoses going to the oil cooler, and then run your own cooling fluid through the oil cooler with a secondary water pump, or something similar. Has anyone tried this? I thought it might be an interesting notion... Any ideas as to how effiecient it would be over stock or air-air oil coolers?

That is what the chevy trucks do with turbo ,water tank electric pump, oil cooler. It must be better than cooling with hot water, ( how dumb )

You could just do what other members with 1st gens have done (including myself). 2nd gen oil cooler swap.

All you need are these:
-2nd Gen oil cooler
-2nd gen oil cooler lines (return and feed)
-2nd gen oil pedistal

That's it. It is a bolt on process and now you would have the oil cooler infront of the rad. If you want more detail you'll have to do a search in the 1st gen section or the 1st gen archive.

But then you have to cool down the water that's cooling the oil...easier to just swap to a more efficient air-oil cooler.

That is what I was suggesting. The 2nd oil cooler setup doesn't use the water lines to cool the oil.

Sounds like a good idea. but I would use the engine coolent and put a cooler in the line that feeds the oil cooler. So you are cooling the coolent down before you try and cool the oil. This was you would't have another water pump. Make sure and tell us how it worked out.

I was gonna swap with the cooler setup from a 79 after I aquire it from the local yard. Theyve been decently priced so far, but I was thinking the lines are in no way long enough to mount the cooler in front of the rad. Are the lines on a 2nd gen longer? Cause there are two 2nd gens at another junk yeard that might still have the setups (I didnt look, I was looking for seats ) Does the 2nd gens cooler mount under the rad, or in front of it?

I'm not sure of differences in the length of the oil lines form a 2nd gen and '79 1st gen setup. What is the length of the oil lines you picked up? All I am aware of is the 2nd gen lines that I got ('88 TII) were a perfect length and fit. Keep in mind that when doing this mod you have to cut a hole the lower part of the rad mounting to let the lines through. Once everything was installed you don't even see the cut in the mounting. The 2nd gen's oil cooler mount infront of the rad.

the Gen II lines are not compatible with the SA lines/cooler. the Gen II uses banjo bolt ends.

I dont have the 79 setup yet, and if the 2nd gen cooler mounts on front of the rad, then the lines would almost HAVE to be longer than the stock 79 lines. Im not trying to combine the two setups, it would be one or the other.

I would suggest just to get the complete rad and oil cooler out of the 79 model, then the standard lines should be the right length.

or just get slightly longer ones made up to suit the 79 cooler in front of the rad.
