Wants to die at 4000 rpm

Well I'm a real newbe to rx7s

Just aquired 83 rx7 form my not mechanicaly minded stepson...he had the car for about a month and it stopped running..just left it in his dads yard 4 8mths and then had to mve it towed it to our place.......I thought it might be a nice project car,,so will buy it from him and spend some time on it.

I had never even seen a motor like this before. I have cleaned fuel lines and basic stuff and managed to get it to run. (took a while) well now idles about 800 and took her out and runs good up to 4000rpm then I was worried if I would get home...but came good again at lower revs...so tried a few more time..same problem.

Just looking 4 some suggestions on where to start.

Thankyou

fuel filter, i would almost bet money on it. Its back by the tank and costs about $4 from NAPA. takes like 5 mins to change if that. Welcome to the wonderful world of spinning triagles

Thanks for your reply .. I THINK

While I was back there saw a wheel bearing leak....

autozone said they can't get ....napa said 9 bucks better do the wheel bearings 2 ... 35 bucks a piece ..mmmmm not sure if this is good ...may as well replace the the rotors and pads ....anything else..like the fuel pump?...calapiers etc ?????

Oh well ...I guess the shocks ...might as well do it all...what about the springs themselves ..look a bit funny do they lose their spring????

Thank you for replying

Does it just go flat at 4k or break up? If it goes flat then I'd say the secondaries aren't operating. The rod is probably gumed up. If it breaks up/ starts running rough, then more info i needed. Could be spark or fuel.
Most likely fuel. These cars are known to run like total **** due to clogged fuel systems. Clogged fuel filters, rusty lines, weak pumps, etc.

If you're loaded, relace everything I'd just do the fuel filter first. Might as well make sure it's going to run before you do the rest of the stuff.

yea, if you got the means, then go ahead and redo the whole car, its 20 years old, it will need most of that stuff. Mine does I know that.

I haffa agree with the guys above, these cars are old and need a lot of attention. springs, yes, bearings yes, brakes yes... it's all about prioritization. Just make a list and go from top to bottom. That's great that you've dived right in and got her to run, with that kind of attitude you'll have her running fine in no time. There are few things that I would suggest, 1) get a Haynes manual, this is the minimum reference you'll need, heck you can even rebuild the engine with just a Haynes manual (get it cheap on eBay) 2) read Felix's Own General Rotary Engine FAQ, there is a lot of invaluable info there and 3) read and do searches on this forum. Between those three references you'll have that car running so well your stepson will be envious.

Good luck with your 1st gem RX-7!

EDIT - as far as it dieing at 4k rpm, I'd look at the accelerator pump if I were you.
