Silverrotor from this site was selling third gen alts that can easily be dropped in a FB and provide some sweet power... But the last day he was selling them was September 1st I believe...

The S4 alt is a direct swap, the S5's are not. They require some rewiring, which I am not familiar with, and more than one of the how to's for the S5 swap have incorrect wiring info.

Just find an S4 alt, get the bolt and the shim, it will jump you from 50 to 70 amps. If you need more than that, you are probably deaf anyway and should get rid of that stero to save weight.

This page was quite helpful when I put the S5 alternator on my S5 13B that I'm dropping into my '85 GS:

Ah!...here's the thread with Silverrotor's details:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...=FD+alternator

btw, since I have been running an electric Black Magic Fan, I've relied on a second gen alt upgrade. If anyone is considering running a Black Magic fan, you'd be well advised to upgrade to a higher amp-output alternator. Those fans really pull the amps.

(PM'd you, Silverrotor)

aws140: details can be found below.

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=363910

ChasRX: It Is the exact same efan I have (#150) which caused me to upgrade to a s5 Alternator later to a FD one. It Is with the former one that was unable to keep up whereas the FD Alt does not even break a sweat.

I should mention that I am also running one of the alternators from silverrotor for my stereo... So far it is awesome .. As far as installing it, it was nothing to be intimidated by. People say it requires modification, which is true but it takes about 30 minutes or so to install it when you have the proper cables and connectors.

The unit looks very nice and the only problem I have with it has been getting the alternator pulley lined up perfectly with the stock drive pulley. And as far as silverrotor goes, he was a great seller, I recieved the unit from him on time and I have been very happy so far. Thats why I mentioned his name in the first place. =)

Both the s4 and s5 swap is easy. It's a straight bolt in job. The S5 has a diff plug set up, but you can easily rewire yourself. Tons of threads done here about it.

FYI
1st gen altI believe is only 55amp
2nd gen is 85
3rd is around 110 I think.

Actually, the s4 Alt (86-88) Is rated at 70amps, wheras the s5 (89-91) Is rated at 80amps. The FD Alternator Is rated at 100amps, but when new It Is not uncommon to see more output which eventually tapers off.

.

I bough the kit from silverrotor and it is great and he was great to work with. I noticed better response from all the systems immediately. Now that I have the 100 amp alt., I am convinced the 50 amp alt was not enough for the car to begin with.

Well, I went ahead and put in my order, today. I noticed a huge difference with the S5-80 amp alternator that I have currently switched over to. I'm definitely looking forward to the additional 20 amps! There is no doubt that the stock 50 amp unit just wasn't enough for my E-fan, power amps, and future fog lamps that I plan on mounting on my (future) air dam.
Eventually we'll all be installing car-puters with DVD players and GPS, too, that will probably pull another 5 amps!
