Want to beat porsche 944
Want to beat porsche 944

My car has minimum modifications, emissions removed, new exhaust from the catalytic converter back. e-fan installed. New tires. and lol a spoiler. Anyways
what does it take for my 1985 Rx7 GSL to beat a 1986 porsche 944?
my car has 150,000 miles, my friends porsche has 148,000 both have been well taken care of. His is stock.
turbo on non-turbo 944?
If it is non, you'll beat him pretty well.
If it is turbo, i would suggest getting a header, and a little weight reduction. should make things interesting.
there a lot of deciding factors to think of too. how good of a driver is he? how good of a driver are you? How is your compression etc....

go for a aftermarket carb, aftermarket fuel setup (carter fuel pump, holley FPR, fuel pressure gauge), racing beat header and presilencer to mate with your catback.
I have a similar setup to what I mentioned about and although its still not running right I was able to take a 5.9L dakota sport in a race... Not bad considering the engine is 5x bigger.
Anyways it would be interesting to see the results let us know!
Oh and I should mention I have seen videos of others on this page with a weber 45, on a 12a running 15's, which is decent for a streetable 20 year old sports car

He is N/A not turbo'd I generally think im a better drive since i have been driving my car for awhile as he is just getting it. He usually does not drive a stick but now he is going to. The engine compression im not sure about... the engine runs real good. So im not quite sure on its compression. What are the specs on the porsche 944 N/As?
I saw an article from 1980...yes I said 1980. It was a feature in one of the magazines. Pacific came out with a turbo kit for the 12a that put out 160 hp. It was faster than the 944 turbo. IIRC the times were fairly close though. Moral of the story is if you put out 160hp then you can beat a turbo. But it does depend heaviliy on driver ability.
thats a pretty weak hp number for a turbo kit because people are getting that kinda power from them with a full racing beat exhaust, and a either sidedraft or downdraft carb... Personally I like the streetability of a N/A rotary cause it will take a beating like no other...

I stomped a '89 944 with suspension mods on an autox course. It was my 2nd time out on the autox, beat him by 2.5 seconds on a 50 second course. SP 12a w/ RB SP exhaust...stock Nikki and tokico blues on the rear...that's it. 175/75R13 Bridgestone Potenza's.
well if the stock turbo models are running 14.9's - 15.4's you will need some pretty decent mods. Easiest way to do this with a 12a would probally be a streetported 12a with a weber 48dcoe, or IDA. Full exhaust, directfire leading igniton, full racing beat exhaust... Now if you want to completely destroy him you should look into the 12a Turbo setups some people on here have. (seanrot for instense)
Oh and we should have asked do you want to beat it in a drag race or a auto-cross course?

well porsche built the cars really really solid so they tendto rattle themselves apart. and mostof thses cars were driven by chicks who never opened them up and have at least 150,000 miles. hense the low ball on the times. these cars usually have 10 lbs of caron build up inside of the engine. if you're racing one owned by a car enthusiast I might worry. remember that a 12a FB only ran a 17.2 stock.
i know a stock 944 vs a FB stock, the FB would lose. 16.4 -17.2 is a .8 difference, since his is stock and the last owner was a lady and i have some slight mods i was thinking maybe i could take him in a straight line or be toe to toe. Or if we come to some turns
!
!
You will lose unless you get more mods then what you have. My friend has a 86 944 n/a with 34,000mi.s and it ran perfect. It would take a stock 305 camaro up to 60mph. I don't think the stock specs really justify it's performance.
hmm what else can i do to help my car.. i know about porting but in not doin that for awhile. How about a cold air intake? << i know doesnt give much hp but it would help.
Where is the best place to run the tube to the front?

lol im not betting on money or anything i just want to make sure the first time i run my car against it doesnt get humilated. I want to show him how mazda compares to porsche.
Race gas?! What would that prove?!
Headers, man, that's all I can say. Go for street port headers, as you WILL streetport later on when you're more addicted to power
A new fuel pump will help greatly, as will modding your carb (at least put mechanical secondaries.)

Yep I thought 160 was pretty weak also but when they come with 100 stock that is over a 50% increase in power. I think that the boost was set as 12psi. I will get the info this evening and post the the times. I drove a 1987 944 N/A quick little car. I think that it would be close.
Well, if you use a fuel pump regulator, your MPG shouldn't drop too much.
It will only help if you've done any mods requiring more fuel. Modified carb, exhaust (I think) porting.
It certainly can't HURT your power.
You're pretty well set for 'first stage' upgrades. You should be at the correct times to be able to beat most modern econoboxes (stock) and a lot of seventies and eighties cars.
The 944 shouldn't give you TOO much trouble, as I've said before. Just stay sharp on the shifts and DONT BURN YOUR WHEELS.
If you come to corners, it will depend on each of your skill levels. He has more weight, true, but he also has a much better stock suspension setup (IRS)

A good low $ boost can be had with the 2nd gen direct fire ignition system. Get on the list for the transistor trick circuit and you'll get an even bigger gain. Improves gas mileage too.
