He's probably got alot of custom work if he is racing you for money. You haven't said anything about it looking heavily modified, so, it probably IS a sleeper.

BAsically, he is saying "Want to hop in our cars, drive for about 2 bucks, then, you can give me $100?"

Not only a Porche engine, but also a Chevrolet Corvair for those of you with long memories. And some of those in later years CAME WITH a turbocharger, and could be tricked up quite impressively!

Karmann was a sub-contracted rebody shop that slapped their Ghia styling onto a VW Beetle floorpan, with a few minor modifications.

Either the guy is cocky, or he has mods, or both. The stock VW engines of the era were loud, air-cooled, wheezy things. Any evidence of water cooling or an air-cooled engine with the Porsche logo on it are dead giveaways.

And (I can't believe I remember this) the Boy George song was Karma Chameleon.

The old VW KG commercial showed the car attempting to go through a giant white sheet of paper much like football players do at the start of a game. You could just make out the shape of the front bumber because the car did not have enough go to break through...

I'm not kidding either, I clearly remember it!

A friend of mine is into VWs. He has a ghia with some mild engines mods and can beat a stock 12a in the 1/8th by about 1.5-2 seconds.
I used to think little of VWs too, but really, they are good cars with solid engines. Their aftermarket support is really good, too.
They have similar advantages that the rx7 has, like light chassis, a decent motor, easy modibility, so don't think you'll walk the guy. I'd be careful about betting unless you got some decent mods yourself.
BTW, I don't think they can use corvair engines by them selves. The crank spins in the opposite direction so I'm told.

The Ghia could have a highly modded flat 6 in there with dual Webers.. a V6 or a V8.. or perhaps also a rotary in it... enough to see nothing but those little taillights pulling away the whole race... in a street encounter, you never know what youre up against.

WTF?!?!?!?
i love my dad's ghia. it is not fast stock, but it handles like a mother! i have had my share of vw's in the day, and i made them all fast (well, except for my 59bug project that i didn't finish). it is very easy, and cheap to get an old vw to run! i built a 68vw van, that could burn through third gear! (it could also pop wheelies!) but, if it is stock, it is very slow.
you will know if it is stock though, as it will sound like any other vw(like a hampster stuck in it's wheel). but if it is not stock, you will know. Also, look for a nice stack of 48 delorto's, and if you see them, you might want to turn down the race.
just my $0.02

I have one....

Its not very fast stock, but it is very very light. I have a freshly built 2300 sitting in the corner waiting on "project funds" to finish. I hope (realistically) to be faster than most C4 Corvettes when she's done.

Talk about a sleeper. (wanna race my veedub?)

hey chris,
with 2300cc's in that car, i don't think you will have any trouble beating most anything! with my experience in vw's (my true love) i have found that they always suprise you... that is if you built it right. but man, i would love to have my 59 bug back! that thing was insane.... well, i will stop now.

The motor was built by a vw guru here in town. Jerry's Sand Rails. Guys from the west coast used to get him to build motors for them. He has some persomal problems and kind of shut down. He did this motor for a hippie friend of mine as a favor... It has chevy valves in the heads....

fun.

bah, porsche this porsche that. V6, V8?? a built stock VW air cooled motor will be very fast in NA form. even better would be a type 2 or 4 built engine.
the good thing(maybe bad) is that just like rotaries, the engine could be built up and look stock to the naked eyes. keep an eye out for big carbs, like mentioned before, either single48s or higher, or dual 44 to 48 or higher.
i have a 61 karmann ghia with a 1.3 liter engine, and a six volt electrical system. fast... fast enough for it to be fun in a nostalgic kinda way.
and of course a rotary will fit right in there and that just opens up a whole new can of worms.

proud owner of 85 gslse, 67 beetle convertible and 61 karmann ghia.

What are these things like for handling? I saw one in the junkyard the other day that had just arrived, pretty sweet looking. Good lines and classic mesh wheels. I saw a pair of SU carbs under the hood.

1900 lbs?!!? Is that easily attainable? I might be interested in this thing for a future rotary project...or even just to have a nice classic car. Any good websites for some more info? Thanks guys.

The Ghias and Bugs generally didn't handle all that well with all the weight in the back the rear liked to come around. And front inside tire lifts on turns! Front end light and goofy beam front suspension.

But rear engined cars brake like a dream!

Man, I feel like a mron now. I don't think it was a Ghia after all, then engine was in the front. I've been looking at KG pics all night, the style is similar to what I saw, but a bit more curvy in the rear. If only I hadn't been on a mission for FB parts I would have had the time to take a closer look. I'll go back early next week, and we can all have a laugh at me when I find out what it really is.
