Hmmm. what can I say. Today, here in Minnesota which was very rainy I might add, was awsome for racing?!
Anyway, I went to a vintage motorsports "TEST day" which results as a day were drive around the course as fast you can SAFELY before sliding off the road. The course consisted of sharp turns and a couple straight aways. Total track length: Aproximately shy of a One Mile. Total turnout aprox 13cars and 4hrs of total drive time if you go the whole time, but you obviously take breaks.
I went there and hung out with 2 other RX-7 owners. They both had FD's, and I drove the '85 bridgeport 12a I have.
Anyway, results: I get passed, but its hard to compete with even mildly mod'd FD's and not get passed, even with a bridgeports acceration(powerband is limiting forsure). However, towards the end of the day, I was getting passed WAY WAY less. I got more courage as experence builds. As a result I was able to get up to 80mph in the straights and drift on the sharper corners(being that it was semi-wet out). I rode in each FD, they mustered ~90mph on the same straights as I did ~80mph, being too short of a straightway being the limiting factor. Were they had me beat was corners!!! I can not even compete with their gripping on wet pavement holding speed and compare it to dry pavement with a 1st gen with a strut tower brace and 205's. If there were fewer corners though, I would of been passed even less without doubt.
All and all, it was way fun. Makes autocross seem redundent for the seat time/cost ratio! Plus you have time to think and improve greatly!
