VIN CHeck & Your Opinion! Thanks! 8)

[Posted in Canadian form as well for quicker answer, my apologies]

Hey All,

Sorry about posting here but the actual VIN thread wouldn't be able to tell me the second half and it's looks pretty old and I need the info by tonight/tommarow morning... I went to see it just today, and wrote down some of the vehicle's info. Keep in mind, this is just a project car. He said it runs "flawlessly" and this gentleman seemed very trustworthy as I talked with him for about 30 minutes. Could you please check:

#JM1FB3313C0615656

What do you guys think of this for $1000:

1982 Mazda Rx-7
1.2 Litre Rotary Coupe
~197,500
Engine & Trans look really really good.
New Carb due to history of leakage.
Manual.
Silver.
Frame & Chassis Appear fine.

Minor rust:
- General rust through the car, nothing that a little sandpape won't be able to
- Little bit on the roof, speckled, not deep @ all
- Over top of the left headlight it's a little deeper, but no holes.
- nothing underneath the wheel wells.

Dents:
- Now, the right front fender has a dent that I would say is about 9 inches wide and 2 inches high and it is pushed in about 4.5 inches. It looks like I could go under it and hit it out so it is back in line with the bumper.. Is this done easily??

Driver-Side Floor Panel:
- I went to sit in the car and he stopped me. I had a quick look but I couldn't notice much but he said the window was left open for a while and the floorboard is soft and he is going to put some extra support there for me.

Thanks a LOT for putting up with my antics...

- Joe

Hmmmm..... floor being soft? Doesn't sound good If he doesn't want you sitting in it, I wouldn't buy it, no offense... When I go to look at a vehicle, I want to sit in it, start it up, make sure everything works, and inspect everything. Sometimes I go as far as peeling up sections of the carpet to see how everything looks.

How much does he want? $1000? If it's got bad floorboard, walk away. There will be others.

put the classified ad down and back away slowly, and no one gets hurt...

If you buy a soft floored 80's car you're not getting a new ride you're getting taken for one.

LOL... Point taken... He didn't really say that exactly, he said something was wrong, I was assuming that, but he said that he can fix it..

I am taking a friend who is a certified mechanic and knows the 1st Gen Rx-7 like the back of his hand.. If it's got a soft floor, don't worry, I won't walk away, I'll hustle...

Thanks for the tips...

See if he can fix it... If he can, then ask him what he did and what it was. If it sounds BAD, then don't buy, if it sounds harmless, and the car runs good and all that, go for it.

Yeah, I can probably get it for about $750 because he said he wants to see it go to someone who will take care of it... (me... ).

The reason why I question how bad it is because he seemed trustworthy and he said, the body is solid and the way he treated the possible problem it made me believe it wasn't a big deal, he kind of said, "Oh, don't sit there yet, I still need to fix that." as he rattled with the seat adjuster.

To me this means, it's not the floor.

Whether this is a simple problem that he will fix or an elaborate con, I don't know but the guy that's coming with me to see it tommarow will so i'll let u all know by tommarow nite! Maybe even some pics!

Thanks,

- Joe

At first you were saying he was shady about it, now you're saying you trust him.

Are you rationalizing because you want to buy the car despite possible problems, or were you overreacting earlier and cooled in hindsight?

Oops. Getting my used car stories mixed up. My mistake!

As to that "I wanna sell it to someone like you who will give it a good home" line, I hear that EVERY time I go to look at a car for sale from a private seller.

Sort of the amateur version of the wink & gun, followed by "I've got a couple of other buyers on the line, but I like your style."

Any ideas/tips on how to work the price lower if the floor is fine???

He said he would like to see it in good hands and not sold for parts so maybe I say $600 and I'll bring it back to show you every 6 mo's? LOL

I'd just say $600 and let him bargain with you to a happy medium. Otherwise he might take it as a threat to stalk him every 6 months *L*

Damn, I'm gonna lose it if there's no floor... ANother thing, I wonder how I'm gonna test drive the thing if I can't sit in it, he better have that badboy fixed...

Yeah really, what I could do is walk away and watch the car sit around for a couple of weeks and then come back again with the $600 offer... There will be others, but I need one for cheap cheap cheap... lol

Just remember there's more than one RX-7 for sale in the Toronto area, Joe. If neccessary drive up to the Wasaga Beach meet and check out the high beams as you check out cars for sale.

Yeah, I'm actually in Peterborough which is 75 kms northeast of Toronto and this car is 10 kms away so it is conveinient but I won't jump the gun because of that, I can't afford to.

If my friend says it's a no go I will too...

Like u said, there will be other cars...

I couldn't tell what the model was either when looking @ it... Are all '82's either 5-speed man or 3-speed auto?

I don't think I want a 4-speed manual...

I wanted Turbo but what can u do, champaign taste on a beer budget, or so they say...

I spend about 6 months per year in the US and still haven't acclimated to their beer... seems they don't like alcohol in beer so I guess they just really enjoy having to pee.

Nothing wrong with a beer budget as long as you choose your brands carefully. Canadian Tire lists rear hatch struts for a 1st gen at $33.50 each ($67) whereas Victoria British has them for sale for $19.95 a pair, or about $30 Canauck Bucks. The catch is to order a bunch of stuff from VB at once or shipping will kill you.
