vacuum advance question

alright, first of all I thought my problems with my car were with the carb and the secondaries not working. now i'm wondering if the vacuum advance solenoids are fucked. when I accelerate, my car falls on its face above 5.5k. every once in a while i'll get past 5.5k, and all of a sudden for a split second it'll surge foward, then go back to it's leisurly pace of accelerating. could it be that the advance isn't working and i need to lock my dizzy, or does it sound like a fuel problem? mods are below.

BP 12A (mazdatrix templates), new clutch/flywheel (stock replacements), holly 465, holly blue fuel pump, -6 lines to FPR, 5/16th fuel line from FPR to carb (trying to figure out how to run -6 lines from the FPR to the carb), earl's fuel filter relocated into engine bay, remote oil filter, magnacore 8.5mm wires, no emissions, RB SP header, RB Duals, no interior, braided stainless brake lines, Racing Beat springs, tocico blue's, new clutch master/slave, new brake master, rb triangulated front strut brace, grounding kit

What are you running for an air filter. Any pics? I'll bet this is your issue! When I ran a *" chrome with a cheapy air filter I lost top end, tried a K&N carb hat with a large K&N cone with even more issues (dropped on it's nose at 5500) and I know the triangular foam ones suck even more. I now run a 14" K&N and pull past redline.

I have the racing beat air filter with a paper element with foam around it. the thing is, most of the time it falls flat on its face, but sometimes something happens, i can hear a change in exhaust tone (this happens at almost 7k when it does happen), and there is a sudden surge of acceleration.
