Question Used transmission, what to check for?

I'll be buying a used transmission very soon, just wondering what I should look for, and after I buy it are there any bits I should look at in detail or replace regardless ?

Just don't want to have to pull the damn thing out again after swapping it in.

Thanks!!

Well hopefully you will make sure that its for an RX-7!

sorry couldn't resist that.

bought the only thing you can do if its not in a running car is drain the oil at the yard, and look for shavings, or chunks, shavings would be a good indicator of some trashed out synchro's, and chunks, well lets just say that chunks are only cool in peanut butter.

also check to see if it was leaking past the front or rear seals, and either way replace both before putting it in your ride.

Hmm that thought never crossed my mind... arent all transmissions the same?

apparently these have been rebuilt, but i dont think tested... Is there a way to test bearings, or should i just regrease the sealed ones and hope for the best...

I got a tooth out of my current box and now sounds like countershaft bearings are gone :P I will definietly replace both seals as my box has been leaking on the cat for the past 8 months.

Cheers kenn,

Paul.

its really hard to tell until you install it and take it for a cruise. The above posts are true but not always.

remove the oil drain plug and check the magnet, if there is alot of metal present, stay away from that tranny!!
also the color of the gear oil call tell you alot too, if its got gold metallic, its the syncro material, get away from that tranny!!!

While the tranny is out, at least check the condition of the clutch. If in doubt, change it. Replacing the clutch requires pulling the tranny, and since it is already out, thats the best time to check and replace if needed.
one more thing to check on the used tranny that should seem obvious, but has not been mentioned, is to see if the shifter works correctly and does not have excess free play. A worn shifter can indicate how hard the tranny has been treated. Also, turn the input shaft in each gear, to feel how smoothly the shaft spins.
