Question Urgent Fuel Pump Advise

I think the fuel pump is gone on my car. I am running a 12A with a stock carburator. I searched a little for a replacement fuel pump on the net and it looks like most places will have to order it. However, Advanced auto stocks a Holley Avenger Street Performance pump. The specs are a little higher than the stock. Stock is 3.7 to 4.7 psi. The Holley comes set at 7 psi, but the write up talks about 5 psi flow also, I'm thinking it may be adjustable.

Will I need a regulator to run the Holley or will 5 psi be close enough (assuming it is adjustable)? Is this even worth doing for a stock carb?

The stock Nikki likes to see something in the 3.0 to 4.5 range, so you MUST use a regulator with the old tech Holley fuel pump...just get a Facet. If you don't plan on any big mods in the near future, it's more than adequate and a whole hell of a lot quieter...

I just pulled the fuel in line and tested for the volume flow and got NO fuel in 30 seconds. I changed the fuel filter yesterday, so I am pretty conviced the pump is gone - plus I don't hear it run at all with the key in the on position.

Mar3, I assume Facet is brand name you are recomending.

Anyone else have a brand recomendation?

yes, Facet is a brand name. and i concur with mar3 ... if you don't plan any major mods in the near future a Holley or Carter will be overkill and probably just plain annoying (with sounds and mounting woes).

Since you have an 85 GSL, your fuel pump will not run when the key is in the "on" position. The pump only runs when the key is turned to "start" or the car is "running". This is true for 84-85 model years.

On the '84/'85 cars, the engine must be physically turning in order for the fuel safety relay to close and energize your fuel pump. Even with the key on the on position, the pump will work for only a quick second and then turn off if the engine eccentric isn't moving...

inittab, intresting point.

But, I don't even hear it run for a few seconds when I put key in the on position. I know, it use to come on for a few seconds when the key went in the on position.

How would you check the fuel flow on an 84-85?

When I rebuilt my fuel system I simply hot-wired the fuel pump so it would fill the lines. I used the connector under the drivers side storage bin.

The Facet pumps are internally regulated to 6 psi, which is a bit high for a stock application. I'm currently running an RX4 pump which is also a bit high, and I really need to get a regulator. Just a little heads-up.

Just like Holley and Mallory, there's more than one Facet model....they have 4.5 psi models...

Per other posts the engine must be turning for the pump to run on the 84-85 models. Easiest way to check to see if it is running is to disconnect the rubber fuel line from the carb and crank it over. Get a can or something to catch the spillage. You should get plenty of gas. If little or no comes out, then follow the Haynes manual on the hot wiring the fuel pump relay to verify the pump is getting juice. If it is, then the pump is likely bad.

Just to state the obvious, make sure there is gas in the tank.

I found a fuel pump at NAPA. It is made by Carter (Federal Mogul). It is a universal fit pump and has everything you need to convert from a mechanical pump to electric. Anyone have any expericance with Carter pumps?

I checked the FSM and the spec for the fuel pump is 2.84-3.54 psi, 1400cc or more per min.

Unfortunately, I can find any specs on this NAPA/Carter pump.

I bought a carter from british victoria about 3 years ago and just put it on and it works great, no more power fade after 6k rpm. I cannot remember what the psi was though, mazda trixs has the original fuel pump for a good price. www.mazdatrix.com
