update on starting problem.

I have been around since last November but still cassified as newbie.
Some of you might remember I have problems starting my son's 84 gsl-se.
It is a beauti of a car but still not able to let him drive it until fixed right because he is just learning the stick. Re did interior and car is clean no rust.
You might recall it does not start when the engine is killed, but will start fine using the key to turn off and on.
After you have kill the motor you have to wait approx. 10-15 mins and hold pedal 3/4 of the way to the floor and crank until it starts. Once started I am able to start and stop using the key with liilte problem.

Last night did a compression check (engine up to temp and EGI fuse pulled) the numbers were not that great.
95 front and 90 rear......124000 km's on the engine. around 75000 miles I think.
What i'm wondering is this my start problem? the hotter it gets the harder it starts because those numbers will definitely drop.

with a few months of summer left, he wants a daily beater and maybe get a rebuild next summer. any thoughts would be appreciated.

or.... is it that when we kill the engine it's flooding all to hell???????

Thanks
hope it's not too long.

Get it rebuilt. The hard to start when hot problem usually means low compression. It's asking you kindly for a rebuild. If you don't listen, it will break an apex seal and then you'll spend a lot more.

The greatest strength and greatest weakness of the GSL-SE is the incredible apex seal life thanks to the metering oil pump oil injectors in the rotor housings. It allows people to run them far longer than the carbed engines. What happens is people don't freshen the seals when they should and meanwhile the apex seals are wearing down below 7mm, which is spec by the way, and they continue to wear until one day one of them lets go.

I've seen one GSL-SE set of apex seals at 5.5mm. That's pretty short. It ran fine though, with only a little loss of compression. If the owner would have done a cheap rebuild it would have ran for another 100k, but instead, one of the apex seals broke ruining the rotor and housing on one side.

You might want to get it rebuild now while it can be done fairly cheaply before something breaks which will either cost you a lot more, or you'll junk the car, like most people do in that situation, costing you an entire car. Seems kinda strange to think about it like that huh.

thanks Jeff20b but it seems to start when hot with the key. i could be wrong, but no one in my area works on these rotaries, i would be looking at a rebuilt not a rebuild. which is going to cost me alot anyway.

I was wondering if those numbers could get us thru the summer as a daily beater.

Thanks again.

Have the fuel injectors checked. The SE is prone to having flooding issues from bad injectors.
I wouldn't think a 124km engine is wore out, a buddy of mine has an SE with 246K (miles) on the original engine......
