Unknown Noise

i just started to hear this noise a couple of days ago that sounds like my front right tire is rubbing my front airdam....now when i got out to check it i didnt see anything that looked like it was rubbing..next i removed the tire to check if there was anything that was behind the tire that could be rubbing and i found nothing.....i put the tire back on and spun it and i heard a grinding noise...so i was thinking that it was either the brakes or the wheel bearing..

i had a friend look at it and he mentioned some **** about it possibly being the yokes or something that has to do with the driveshaft....im thinking it might be the wheel bearing...but if i put my head down by the shifter it does sound almost like the sound is coming from the actual tranny....this is y im soo confused....when im driving it sounds like its the tire...but when i put my head down it sounds like something is bouncing around inside the tranny

now i can be rolling down the road in neutral and i still hear the noise....and i can engage and disengage the clutch and the sound doesnt seem to get quieter or stop.....the sound gets louder as i speed up and it stops completely when the car comes to a complete stop.....

if anyone can help me or needs me to explain it a little better plz post.....right now im not driving the car and i really need to be driving it so any ideas are a great help at this moment

thanks, parker

Sounds like the driveshaft to me. Anytime that you have a noise that gets louder with vehicle speed, independent of engine or tranny RPM, it's either the rear pumpkin (differential and assorted gearing), or the driveshaft, itself. If it were the outter wheel bearings, you'd be hearing the 'whirring' sound from that side when you drive - test this by driving next to a wall with the windows down - you'll hear the reflection of sound off of the way, and can tell which side is the problem (change both - they go out at the same time).

As to the driveshaft U-joints, these are a Mazda Factory replacement, only, i.e. new driveshaft. Mazdatrix (www.mazdatrix.com) has replacement shafts that use an easily replaceable U-joint for future replacement - if I had to do it, I'd go with one of these. HTH,
