under $1000 for a turbo, for my 84 GSL

hey guys,
Today at work, i was talking to a guy that installs turbos as a hobby. He said he would get me a turbo and install it for me, on my 84GSL, for under $1000.

What do you guys think??? Is it a good idea??
The thing is......my motor is basically a stock 12a.

I'm worried about blowing seals, or even worse....blowing the motor.

The turbo is adjustable, but he recommends setting the boost at 5psi. Claiming that this will give me at least an extra 100HP.

I would really like to do this, however, i'm not that familiar with the rotary motor yet. I'm also not to inclined about turbos either.

But, of course, that's why i'm asking for the expert's advice on this one.

Basically, i just wanted to know if what he claims is true (before i spend a grand on this)

and if my stock motor can handle it.

any advice would be appricated! Thanks!

Is it intercooled?

It is possible to turbo your motor for $1k , but it takes a whole lot of work to get it there. The carb, Fuel system and ignition system must be modified to work with boost, I just don't see this for that cheap of price but if he is going to do a good job it is a good deal.

I assume that the 12a will handle 5 psi of boost, but I doubt it will net you 100 horses, that is double your stock power.

Just my opinion,

If it's good, and you trust the guy with your life, do it. Sounds like an awesome deal. But I would only expect maybe another 75 horses; still enough to get the 2300 lb car going nicely.

i'm not sure if it is intercooled.
and as for doubleing the HP, i was suspicious of that.
However, the guy is very reconized, and i heard that he does good work, so.... i really don't know.
The only major upgrade i have planned in the near future is an MSD ignition system.
Oh yeah, i already have the exhaust done.
not a great job, only straight pipe to a REDLINE high flow muffler but, hey it's better than stock right!?

isn't the 13b a better engine to turbo ???something
about compression, and rotors,,and housings,, and FI,,
the 12a with the nikki, is just not designed for the likes..
but hey !! you never know,, i think just about every 1st
gen 12a owner dreams of more power, and if it were
easy, and live, we would hear more about it here ..
your best bet is to buy a 13bt and convert over to that
the 13bt can be bought for $ 850.00 US..a TII wiring
harness would also be required,,and fuel system...
thats just about $ 1000.00 US..maybe a bit more..
but worth it,,i like the supercharger idea better, and that
will work with the 12a also, and won't burn up the 12a
from the mass heat under the hood,,,,,atkins,.,.

With high compression rotors, runing about 8 psi is gonna be about it, and I doubt this is intercooled
