u-joints

how do i go about replacing the u-joint on the drive shaft. i have a 1980 rx_7 and there is some play in the drive shaft where the u-joint is. every time i shift gear it makes a lil noise. can i do it my self or do i have to bring it to a shop.

You can do it yourself, Haynes manual is pretty good about it, or you can take it to a shop, on or off car, your choice. To replace the u-joints though, you need to remove the driveshaft. If you do, there will be gear oil coming out from the tranny side, you can jack the rear of the car up (pretty high) and you wont get as much. Piece o cake.

Yeah,

If you have never done it before I suggest you take the drive shaft out and bring it to your local NAPA machine shop.


They do not charge much for that and it's easier that way.
