turn signal voltage drop

I've just recently noticed that when I turn on my turn signal the voltage gauge clicks along with the signal. I.e. everytime the turn signal lights, the voltage drops. It just drops to just above 12.

Is this normal ? Should a turn signal really be affecting the voltage ?

Thanks,

Rhett

Mine does the same thing. I'm thinking either there is a short and the voltage really does suffer when the signal lights up, or the electrical connections are placed too close to the voltage gauge and it creates what is called a 'ground loop' and causes the gauge to read funny. Any other ideas?

Mine does the same thing. And, when you go to put both windows down at the same time, do they go slower than 1 at a time and cause the voltage gauge to go down? And, when your at a stoplight a night, when you rev to go all the cabin lights brighten as your rpm goes up from idle? I have all of those symptoms. I too want to figure this out. Anybody got any ideas?

Mine does the same thing, i think the problem stems from the same volatge that supply the cluster also blinks the indicator on the dash... Its a electrical design flaw from mazda My dome light even dims MILDLY when hitting brake pedal... Its just one of those weird LWI (Live With It) problems

hey rhett.. i didnot realise that you even went on this forum.. i donot think you have seen my seven since i switched bodies, but mine does the same thing. my old 80 never had that problem (although periodically my turn signals would not flash, just stay on constant). i just figured that it was a wiring problem, and was igoring it until i get a new wiring harness in there.

Mine does it do. replaced the battery cables to no avail. Need to get the battery tested, and hopeuflly a second gen alternator would fix it. It's freaking annoying.

yep mine DID it also

DID as in pastence

I noticed both my 84 gsl's never did it
so why should my GS do it?

It should'nt

READ THIS IT WILL TELL YOU HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM,
AND YES IT IS BAD FOR YOUR ENGINE IF YOU DONT TAKE CARE OF IT

mine did it ever since i bought the car,
the guy said "it has some electrical problems"

the reason i say it is bad for your engine is because your fuel pump is on the same circuit, and your voltage is really dropping, its not just a wiring trick,
as your voltage drops so is your fuel pump,
if it is doing this then chances are it is doing it when you hit the brakes as well you just dont directly see the drop on the volt meter

OK so here is how you solve the problem,
first replace the fusable links,
probably not the main problem here but you have to start here,
you need more voltage at the interior fuse box so we have to get it there,

now another good thing to do it take a wire and run it from your alternator to your battery,

Ok now you will need to run a pos wire from your battery "10 gauge will work fine" into your car,

you will go under the steering column and attach it to your WHITE/RED wire "1982-85 rx7"

now its time to solve the problem,
the problem is right under the driver seat storage bin,
there is a nice big clip that is probably coroded to high hell,

go buy 2 pieces of wire "10 feet 14 gauge"
hook up one wire to each tail blinker bulb "the oppisit of the black wire should be yellow green i think"

now take the two wires and run them straight up to the driver side fuse box area,

remove the speaker panel and you will see a big wire harness coming from the floor of the car going up

now find your two wire colors in there,
connect wires and just leave the old wires or cut them out "your choice"

voila problem solved

I saw what you wrote the first time but I disagree.

The maximum amount of voltage drop at the fuel pump with the turn signal on is only about 0.4 volts. I checked. And that's not even constant... it fluctuates with the turn signal.

Again I say... why bother?

my drop was so bad at the pump you could hear the pump die out with the blinker along with the engine if you sat and paid attention,
some people dont have it as bad but it is a problem, the cars didnt come off the assembly line doind that so why should you put up with it now?
