Turn signal return?

When I flip the turn signal on my 85 GS, it doesn't return after I turn. Is this normal or shoudl it turn the signal off after I turn like most other cars?

It is suppose to cancel like other cars. There is a plastic ring under the steering wheel with 2 pegs that insert into the steering wheel. Often the pegs will break and the cancel mechanism will not work. I belive a new ring is about $3 or so from the dealer. I can look up the part number if you would like. I had to do the same thing on my car.

There is a technical bulletin on this somewhere... page 14 of the TSM Body Electric shows a picture of the 2 peg insert - a plastic ring with 2 pins. The pins are prone to breaking off. I recall reading the time for service was 0.5 hrs., for the professionals doing the work. I think it takes like 3 days and a six pack for some of us just to get the steering wheel off.

I rigged mine years back after my friendly mazda dealer wanted to sell me the whole combo switch to fix the problem. I cut a small spring in half and screwed small screws into eaither side of the blinker lever. The springs sit on the screws and stay in place. My signals dont stick on anymore but return to center when I let them go. I never checked VB or anywhere else since I found this place but if its a 3$ part Im gonna have to fix it.

The part number is: BA29-66-126 The part should come up as CAM, CANCEL. You can get it through the dealer. I don't think VB or Mazdatrix carries it. From memory, it was like $3.24 or something when I bought mine about a year ago or so.

You just need to pull the steering wheel, and slide the old ring out and put the new one on. You have to be careful when you put the steering wheel back on so that you don't break the pegs again. It is a pretty easy job once you get the steering wheel off.
