turn a first gen. RX7 into a powerful car

Alright lets face it, a 1979 RX7 is listed as around ONE HUNDRED HORSEPOWER. Not exactly something to be proud of. I'm working on a limited edition '79 and I've considered getting a turbo or something along those lines down the road. What would I need to do to turn it into a fairly powerful car?

well power isnt what these cars are known for, you want an *** load of cheap power go v8, although you wont get any support here. you can make about on 150 at the wheels with a few bolt ons, and aroinf 180 if do a street port, now turbo, can be done but im gonna tell you to search, because ther are many threads on this subject. welcome aboard.

Rx-7s have a differnt type of power you cant judge on HP or dissplacement specs becuase those specs are on the standerds of a 4 stroke piston engine its just like the differnce between 2 stroke and 4 stroke on motorcycles 4 strokes have more horese but 2 stroke will always smoke a 4 stroke why? less moveing parts thats why higher rpm tollarnces the Rx-7 is the only car iv seen that can tollarate 10k rpms (with few mods) the car is unstopable is some types of raceing =)

Hondas suck indeed what does honda have in comparison to the RX-7? honda s2000 perhaps to bad they are slow you have to dump thousands of dollors into a Honda of any kind to get them to 12-13k rpm the Rx-7 only needs the govern removed now think what you could have done with the money you suped up your shitty honda civic to do what the RX-7s do stock you could have suped an RX-7 and be one of the fastest cars around

Remove the govern? lol

I do agree that 100HP in a 1st gen feels like 150 or more in a piston engine car of comparable weight. Why is that?

you need to do more than remove the governer, you need carbon apex seals, hardened stationary gears, and something to do with the e-shaft so it dont flex.and even if you left the rest of the rotary stock it quits maken power past seven abd a half. in a boinger, you do need more work, and i too hate hondas, well mostly just the ricey drivers, honda makes good motors.

and even if you get a car to rev that hi, a scatter sheild would be an excellent investment, so stock is not a good idea

I watched a story on the news about a man in portland oregon was running from the cops in an RX-7 went to turn off of the highway in 5 gear he used both of his hands to grind it down into second so he could make the corner granted he droped his trany but they estamate the car reached 10.8k before it gave out...... a stock honda would die before it even got close

Damn, I wish the news around here gave us that much detail on car chases. Our news anchors wouldn't know jack about 2nd gear or estimated 10.8k RPM levels. Hell they wouldn't even be able to ID the car as a Mazda much less the model.

I knew that there had to be some reason to live in Oregon. LOL

The book the DMV uses here in Missouri has the rotary engine rated at 0HP!! Of course they have to charge you for something so they take the next engine shown in the list which is 19HP. Always fun renewing here. Gonna miss it when I move up to MI. Watch out Perfect Circle

s4 13bT, modified 13b front cover, rebuild motor with series 6 seals, modified sump, modified exhaust manifold, 3 inch exhaust, s4 turbo, mtx8, 15psi, front mounted top mount and a tuner should get u some power at the wheels. Say around 230rwhp. The simplest way to get more power out of a rota, is to throw money at it in the right places. Easiest way, bridgeport it, chuck on a webber, (not a holley!!!!), and your ready to rock and roll. Be prepared to go deaf .

The torque though not much is spread over a wider rpm range. Simple math really, area under the curve (integral) determines the acceleration over that rpm range.

Oh, and what everyone like to forget, gearing is equally important. If you are around rockcrawlers you know what I mean. I know a guy who has a 12a powered rockcrawler (stock ports), holley carb, turns 44" wheels and has placed nationally in competitions. Unfortunately he is not online but I have seen his buggy, I couldn't believe my eyes. And yes, it was the loudest rockcrawler there!

THERE AIN'T NO GOVERNOR ON AN FB!!!! They are only governed by the max air flow of the carb. If you put a larger carb on, you could rev it up to probably 15000 rpm, but it wouldn't last long at that rpm. You need to prep the engine properly.

I'm all for getting the Michigan RX7 owners together. There are a couple of road courses around Grand Rapids where you can run the track for the evening for about 40 bucks. Haven't tried it yet, but when I get the bugs worked out I'm there!

From what I've heard, the 1st mod you should make for more horses is the exhaust. I hate that tinny sound from the stock exhaust anyway, so a RB system is 1st on my list. Good luck!
