Turboing a Carbed engine

I know that in Japan they had a 12a First gen turbo, Was it carburated? I am looking into doing this but i need some help on if you can even turbo a carburated car. Thanks. Also..if you go on EBAY you can type in "12a turbo" and check out a 1st gen J-spec Rx-7 Turbo.

The J-spec 12A turbo engines were fuel injected, not carburated. Its fairly simple to turbo a carbed car. There is two ways to do it. First is called a blowthrough setup, and second is a drawthrough setup. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Basically, a blowthrough setup has the carb AFTER the turbo and the turbo blows the air through it. This requires special preping of the carb to prevent the floats from collapsing and anything from leaking. You also would need a rising rate fuel pressure regulator and an FI fuel pump. This is the prefered method.

A drawthrough setup is exactly that, the turbo draws the air/fuel mixture FROM the carb, putting the carb before the turbo. Because of this, only low boost levels can be used with a drawthrough setup since you can't use an intercooler. But the advantage of the drawthrough setup is that the carb doesn't need anything special done to it, you don't need a special fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump, and its just overall cheaper and easier to set up. Actually, any carburated car with a roots type supercharger is set up like this, supercharger under the carb, therefore drawing the air/fuel through the supercharger.
