There is no kit for a first gen, although I have seen guys use a FC turbo on a SE engine, but it requires quite a bit of custom work to make it work, you're better off getting a T2 engine and swapping that in...

Have you not been reading in the last 2 years of membership? There is no 'kit' for the 1st gen 13Bs. 2nd gen turbos are usually found on 2nd gen engines. Some have managed to swapthe S4 intake and turbo to an SE engine, results are mixed. I believe there is a writeup or someone's webpage that covers the install.

Bottom line, a TII swap is a better option.

Wow. Almost 1,300 posts and asking where to find a turbo kit....

You want a turbo kit? Do what Trochoid said - TII swap. Best turbo kit you can buy.

Yep.

Even up to 92,the N/A 13B guys have to homebrew with TII stuff, create their own custom turbo system,or just swap in a TII powerplant.
Considering Mazda did all the research and development to create the TII,its by far a better choice than turboing an engine thats designed to be N/A.
Less to go wrong......no guessing,no fittment issues,no tuning,less grief/more power.

I will have to find the article, but yes you can bolt a S4 or S5 turbo onto a GSL-SE,plum in a couple of extra cold start injectors from a VW on a hob's switch

I searched the internet and ended up getting a JDM engine from some site, haven't run it yet, but its got compression, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. You're gonna have a hard time finding a USDM engine around here, but there are a few rotary shops in our area you might wanna ask just for the hell of it.

Jose....

You have a gsl-se like me.... it's not that though to do!

Lock your dizzy, weld on 2 injector bungs with some secondary injectors with a fuel pump.... control it with a haltech f5.

run oil and coolant to a second gen turbo....

make a turbo manifold spacer or a custom manifold like me...

route ic piping

new exhaust

your car will act like an n/a until you spool at whatever rpm you build pressure.

either way you chose it'll be expensive, but well worth it in performance.....

Well I KNow if none makes a turbo kit for a First Gen 13b then, the sure as hell don't have one for a 12a right? So...does anyone (including members here) have a 12a turbo motor lying around or at least the carb, manifold, and the turbo? or can make a kit for me? Cause I don't wanna do a swap and Dont ask why I wanna Stay with the Carb...... but, if no one makes one.. then could someone right me up a price list for adding a turbo to my 12A and take in mind it's gonna be my Daily Driver and everynow and then my little street sweeper...so I dont really need a big turbo or something that makes alot of boost...but,yea if you can make a list of prices with the parts will need, the services i'll need done, etc.

---thanks, Nate

The search button doesnt always give you the resultd you want!!!!!! Ive been looking in here for info for 3 weeks now on that subject. Finally I registered to ask about turbos. I have an 84 with a 13b. So I have the equipment at my shop to fabricate anything. Here is are my questions. Number One. I turbo my car , will it still pass all these cali smog requirements?? Number Two. What do we think of forced air induction !!!! Same thing, will it still pass the smog?

Yeah, searching to turbo swaps and upgrades sucks in this section, partly because the questions is asked so frequently and there are so few decent write ups on it. Did you search the archives?

I can't give you a specific answer on your question, but my best guess is you will have better luck getting a TII swap to pass as Steve84gs has. It may be possible to swap the S4 intake, injectors, sensors, exhaust, engine harness, ecu, etc., to your SE 13B. Whether it will pass CARB, no idea.

ummm.....all factory 12at's were FI. Here's what you'll need:

EFI fuel pump
ss lines and a/n fittings
boost prepped carb
full carb tuning kit (floats, needles, air bleeds, the works)
carb hat
intercooler
piping to said IC
better radiator
big ignition system to light off all the fuel and air
custom turbo manifold
O2 bung in custom downpipe
motor rebuild if you want it to last a decent amount of time

OR:
Just ship it to Robert at RotaryShack and have him do a turn-key blowthrough setup. It'll be alot easier, and from your post it looks like you're looking to throw money at a setup and not have to worry about the headaches of actually putting it together yourself.

NO, it will not pass CARB emissions requirements. After the recent ban of the rolling 20 (or was it 25?) year exemption, no SA/FB with forced induction will pass CARB standards. Hell, i bet 99.9999% of the cars in the first gen section wouldn't pass CARB standards.

As far as what we think about Forced Induction, you're going to get an opinion from anyone, but no conclusive evidence. 12a's have HUGE power potential, just look at Robert from Rotary Shack. His handle on here is 680rwhp12a. Some people are N/A fanatics, but overall if you're shooting for 250+whp, turbo is the best way to go. Motor will last the longest (provided you tune it properly), and it will be much more streetable. Superchargers are decent, but are VERY limited on a rotary. They just can't supply enough volume for the rotary at high-rpm without severly heating the air or cavitating (or is cavitating what causes superheated air at high rpm's with a supercharger?).

I'm not sure about that. As far as I can tell a T2 swap meets all the California requirements:
* US-spec engine from the same year or newer
* Of an engine type originally offered in the vehicle (a 13B)

You simply need to have all the factory emissions equipment or CARB approved replacement, and you'll have to pass emissions standards for the year of the engine instead of the year of the car.

Now you won't be able to bolt on a turbo kit and have it pass, but you can swap in a whole T2 engine, which is cheaper and better anyway, and have THAT pass.

It will, if its a factory installed engine.Swapping an engine from a newer car into an older car will always be legal, under the current laws.Foced induction has absolutely nothing to do with it,never has.
My BAR approval sticker(s) have no mention of turbos, forced induction,or anything of the sort.Forced induction is not the issue, maintaining smog control systems like AIR,EGR,CAT,PCV,MIL,EVP...ect, is what they are looking for.More than likely, you could use any EFI rotary intake manifold you want, and the reff isnt gonna care or even know....as long as the smog control devices are there and working, for the year of engine you are trying to get approval for.
So long as,
1....The engine comes from the same year or never vehicle,
2....It maintains all the smog equipment that the donor vehicle had,
3....Its from the same weight class of vehicle,car/car,light truck/light truck,
You can swap any car engine you want into a 1st gen.....doesnt matter if its N/A,turbo,diesel,piston,rotary,4 cylinder,6 cylinder,ect,ect,ect..........

Ive got 3 successful,CA smog refferee approved engine swaps in the last 5 years. In the land of smog control(which is soon to be the whole country) the TII or FD 13B swap is the only way to have a legal, turbo 1st gen.
