turbo II vs GSL-SE rear end...who wins?

Im planning on doing a T-II swap into a 1970 opel gt and as it is live axle, I was thinking of transferring the rearend from a GSL-SE into the opel...it is also live axle so mounting shouldnt be that big of an issue, but theres a lsd and rear disks (major plus)...so to my question...how much power and torque can one of these things take?
thanks

The GSL-SE rearend is pretty sturdy. If you're using the car for street driving, it should be sufficient. If you're going to dragrace and build up the T-II motor, consider a Ford 9-inch.

Data point: David Lane's turbo GSL-SE puts out about 300 hp. He recently broke a tooth on his pinion gear and had to have the differential replace. That's after about 90,000 miles and 19 years of autocrossing.

My own project car has a T-II engine and gearbox with the stock GSL-SE rearend. However, it's still in the "being built" category, so I can't give you first-hand results.

Thanks for the feedback, atilla...As the opel weighs in at around 21-2200 lbs soaking wet, I dont think Ill be putting out any more than probably around 250-275 hp...anymore than that would probably be overkill...and no I will not be doing any dragracing...perhaps the occasional track day or auto-x day, but mostly daily driving...300 horses for 19 years does sound pretty sturdy though...
Thanks

No contest the TII rearend is stronger, but its also more complex and not the greatest IRS in the world.
The SE rearend is no stronger than any 84-85 axle,it just has a lower ratio, 4.07 compared to 3.93.Much simpler to install and can handle a lot of power, unless you abuse it.

My SE rearend has held up to 4 years of 300hp,street-use TII power. Its starting to hum a little, but its still completely servicable and Im going to rebuild it.BTW it already had 100K when I got it from a junkyard.
I had a 78 GLC with a Chevy V-6 in it and a small axle 82 GSL rearend. It stayed alive for 10 years with no complaints and is still in one piece, waiting for a buyer.

The GLC had a stock 82' RX-7 GSL rear axle,so yea it has discs and LSD.But its been narrowed a bit and rebracketed so it will only fit into a rear wheel drive GLC.

Instead of the 9" Ford rear(too heavy)..... try the KIA Sportage rear.

The Kia rear is LSD.... 4.56 Ratio. The disks are not from Kia... I kept the stock TurboII disks..... put them together w custom fabrication/welding.

Question, what would be a good heavy duty rear end for a 82 Rx7 GS,? Since see ya talking about the Ford 9, the Ford 8.8 the GSL-SE rear end etc.. I just want to know what would be a good choice and easy installation?

Well if the kia rear end doesnt have disks stock, then I dont really want to do the modification to get them...I guess Id rather work with the GSL rear end and get disks stock...there should be modification to do on it too...but it will be stuff like suspension mounting points. Anyhow, thanks

In Puerto Rico and the US, the Kia Sportage rear is the new way in amateur drag racing.
It may not be stronger than the ford rear, but I feel confident running 517RWHP.
It is super light... I was even able to carry it (150lbs less than the ford).

I'm pretty sure a ford 8.8 or probably even a 9" don't weigh 150#, either that or I am a huge stud because I can pack each of those around.
