Turbo II motor into an 80 rx7

I know you guys have probably heard this a million times and I have been searching, but would like to do this within a week. I have a 1980 rx7 and the motor is shot. I was thinking about replacing it with a Turbo II engine. How many people have done this swap? what is all needed to do this? And can I still use my 5 speed tranny or will I have to swap that too? I am still searching, but want to get this done soon. If it helps, I work at an import shop with all the necessary tools, and a good knowledge on all imports including the 7. So if any one can aanswer these Q's for me, that would be great, thanks.

Well, I am doing pretty much the same thing, but my base is a GSL-SE which is easier to do.

So, basically, the bellhousing on the 12A trans is not the same as 13B turbo. The 12A trans and the GSl-SE trans is also weak for the TII.

Anyway, I would personally (as in if I were you, I am not driving down and doing it myself) rebuild your 12A and use it. The 12A is a easy rebuild. Burns oil right? Apex seals. Easy fix. Tear apart and put back. There are like only 20 serious parts to remouve and replace and six parts to change (apex seals).

1. the bellhousing is't the same but the pattern is so you can run a n/a flywheel with the 13bt (just make sure it is or the same series)
2. if your engine burns oil it isn't the apex seals they don't see any engine oil. If it burns oil it's because of the oil controll rings.

so toss that post out the window

thanks for replying fellas. There is no compression in the front rotor. Do think that it might be an apex seal? Can I just go down to the Mazda dealer and buy a set and do it myself, (I am very mechanically inclined) or should I just replace it with a used one that runs. See I am more of a turbo guy, and those are the types of cars that I work on. I love this car and even running on one rotor, it can still drift alright. I am planning to buy a 3rd generation here in the next week, and then when I sell my bike, I will buy a single turbo kit. But for the time being, this car and this bike are the only means of transportation I have at the moment, and the weather is 30 degrees F here so riding the bike is out of the question so I have to get my rx7 fixed. If it helps, I do have a shop manual for the first gen, will that help in fixing my 7? Thanks again for all that responded.

no compression? Tear down the motor (very easy) and change the apex seals. Change all of them. A used one usually has covered so many miles that it will soon need apex seals or needs them now. Change the apex seals in the 12A and get a turbo off a mopar and play with it and you got a turbo 12A that costs less than 10 dollars (cost of one mopar turbo at my yard). The turbo's on mopars are everywhere.
