Turbo Charging an 85 13b
I bought an 85 rx7 off my father and also went and bought a spare 13b out of an 85 from the junk yard.. what needs to be done to the motor so it can handle the power? and what turbo would you recommend?
Also what is the difference between a first gen. 13b and third gen 13b (Turbo)?
Thanks....

well, you could just slap a turbo kit together and run on 10 psi and be fine. will make around 200 rwhp. if you want more, get in to porting, better apex seals, bigger turbo, etc..

'85 13B...if it is out of an SE they came with two 650cc injectors. Fuel regulator is 71psi and if I am not mistaken handles up to 195 or so lph. You would need to go with a Carter(Walbro) 255lph pump. I say Carter because I think that is what most here run with the turbo setup. I run one without turbo. It is 95psi shut off and like it says 255lph or right around 68gph. Yes, the regulator will handle it.

Agreed. Prior experience with turbocharging SE's has proven to be a waste of time. Do it right the first time.

If you turbo an SE,youll need to add aditional injectors. The SE has only 2 680cc units, while the TII has 4 550cc injectors that are staged based on RPM and load. The SE computor isnt setup to control staged injection,so youll need an additional injector controller.
Its easier to do a TII swap into the SE since its made for EFI and the TII engine is made for boost. Not that lots of people havent boosted SE engines, but you have to rig stuff since its a N/A engine.Turbo mounting, oil feed/drain,fuel delivery, timing control, injector control, knock control, compression, port flow...all of these are integrated into the TII powerplant, and all have to be adressed with a turbo'ed N/A engine$$$$$.
Better to start with the right platform and save yourself the cost/grief later on down the line....my opinion.

As for the question about 13B vs 13B-rew (3rd gen). There are many, many differences...too many to list, since I'm lazy. Think: the difference between a 1964 small-block Chevy V8 and a 2004 small-block Chevy V8.
