Turbo 1st gens owners. What size do you tap the front cover?

I am presently rebuilding my 12a 1/2bp-1/2sp. Once it is tuned and broken in, I will be looking at turboing it. While I have the engine apart, I might as well tap the front cover for the turbo oil return line. If I decide not to turbo, I can always cap it.

What size tap and type/style of fittings do you reommend for this?

Thanks, Scott.

I believe I used a 1/2 NPT taper pipe tap.
The OD of 1/2" pipe is about the same as the stock TII drain's OD. A short piece of 1/2" ID pipe in the front cover, and a piece of rubber hose and you can hook it up quite easily.

Steve,

Thank you very much sir. I appreciate the quick response and not being told to search. I just read through the entire 28 pages of of the turbo fb thread that was just ressurected, and didn't find my answer.

Steve is right. thats what I'm planning to use except Im just too darn lazy to start with the turbo project. Except with mine, it will not go to the usual place (below the OMP on a SE cover). it will be on the flat section which runs parallel with the front engine mount then use a 45 for better gravity drop.

I tapped mine on the left hand side on the bottom of the cover, if that helps at all! And I used a 1/2" NPT tap.

Thank you gentlemen, great responses. Looks like I need to go buy a bigger drill bit and tap.

I'm gonna use 1/2 npt with a 3/4 barb. I bought the 1/2 npt with 5/8th barb from home depot but the inside diameter was too small in my opinion. With the 3/4 barb though, it's just a fraction smaller than the diameter of the stock oil return lines. I found the size I needed online.

Good idea. I didn't think about the barb narrowing the diameter for flow. I was thinking about just using a 90* barb when I hook it up. For now it will be a nipple and cap.

I think he meant that a -10 is bigger, not that yours wasnt -AN. -10 is 5/8. As Robert said, you cant go too big. A lot of people Ive read about or talked to said they used -10 (5/8, whatever) also, and its what I planned on using. 1/2 works well too though, just no smaller.

I used 3/4" heater hose and 3/4" npt fittings. The hose is soft, but it doesn't leak......yet

2nd Question and a 3rd

I was under the impression the the oil return went to the bump in the front of the cover, circled in yellow. Not sure where I got that idea. Upon further investigation, this will interfere with the front mount. Looked at the TII motor I have and the oil return is in the red circle. So I assume that is the proper location.

Since I will be running premix, are there any downsides to removing the internal parts of the OMP, gear, shaft, all of it?. I have to remove it anyway for powdercoating, if I don't need to reinstall it, I won't.

Thanks, Scott.

If you are premixing, take it all out, and make a block off plate.

Yes, RED Circle.
