Trying to fix the gauge lights

The dash lights on my '84 Gsl stopped working and i can't seem to fix them. I pulles to whole gauge cluster off to make sure the bulbs were fine, and they were, so i moved on to the dimmer switch.

The lights that light up the fan and heater ***** were also not working so i suspected the dimmer switch. I pulled it and jumped it only to blow a fuse. One of the red 10 amp ones that control the headlights and tail lights. Does anyone one know what kind of resistor i could use in place of the dimmer switch as to not blow any fuses?

Oh, also, now that i've hooked the wires back up to the dash, my tachometer doesn't work. The rest of the gauges work as well as the turn signals and speedo, but not the tach. Also if the Overrev buzzer works, why not the tach?

Down by the radio location, there are a couple wires that look as though they should be plugged together, however, they should not be hooked together. This sounds like a possible cause of your trouble. If I remember correctly, one of these wires is blue w/ a red stripe.
When these get hooked together, it shorts the dash lights out, and usually frys the dimmer. Bypassing the dimmer and blowing a fuse is a good sign of a short. You shouldn't need any kind of resistor in place of the dimmer, unless you want to lower the brightness of the dash lights.
