Shesh... If you haven't forgetten the sneaky bolt under the starter, you've probably caused the tranny input shaft to bind or worse, bend. It shouldn't be that hard to get it off.

Yes it needs to come out. The starter needs to come off too, one of the starter bolts goes through to the engine. (And there's a hidden bolt above that, that the battery's ground cable goes to) But the starter needs to come off anyway to get at that little bolt buried under the starter.

By the way... Keep the starter bolts separate from the others. The short starter bolt is a different pitch than any other bolts on the car. Lose it or mix them up and you're screwed.

yes... I just discovered the different pitch issue last weekend - its a metric 10mm 1.5mm compared to the normal finer pitch on everything. When trying to put my trans back on guess which bolt I tried to put into the bottom of the block on the exhaust side? I even part trashed the bolt thread.....
good one Mr Mazda!

sucks if your serious

i just let them fall on the ground.. come to think about it, they are under a 18'x20' slab of concrete we poured last week. doesnt matter, the engine and tranny were going 2 different places anyways.

Don't feel bad. When I did my engine swap two years ago I found that I lost have that starter bolt, but had an extra trans bolt instead. (Figure that one out... the engine swap was performed in about 5 hours in one sitting. I can lose *anything*) So I forced a normal pitch (10x1.25) bolt in there. "Crossthreads are better than no threads" Fast forward to last month when I put that '80 trans in the '85. THIS time I kept the starter botls segregated. Despite being crossthreaded, the correct (10x1.5) bolt threaded right in and tightened down. Sweeet.

By the way... there is one more place where 10x1.5 threads are used - the two holes in the flywheel where the flywheel puller is supposed to thread in. I made my own puller out of angle iron, a couple sockets, and (this is cool) head bolts from a DOHC Saturn.

- Pete (Lug bolts make fine dowel pin pullers, too!)
