transmission parts

Anybody know where I can get a illustrated parts breakdown of a 79 5 speed tranny? I am in the process of rebuilding and in need of some part numbers. Any help would be appreciated.

i have the haynes manual and it doesnt go in depth too much about the tranny. I need to know every part where it goes and and the part numbers to each individual part washers, nuts, gears etc., And what is the fsm and where can that be found at?

go to Mazdaformance.com
There is a section where you can download the model-year specific illustrated parts manual on an Adobe PDF format (the software to read PDF is free and I think right there, otherwise, the Adobe site will have it).
Note the 79 and 80 transmission is identical
Beyond that there was also printed a separate service bulletin on servicing the 79-80 transmission. Your mazda dealer may (if the company was around in 80) have this and let you copy theirs OR keep an eye on ebay, I have seen them a few times though they are rare. Likewise, you can/should get a factory service manual for your car. All the rebuild detail (but not part numbers!!) is there. mazdatrix.com sells them new for (yikes!) $80 if your in a rush OR ebay has them regularly for sale usually for $10-25 in used condition. Again, the 80 version is fine for transmission work. Good luck!

Are all 79 trannys the same?

My shifter comes out in a different place than the later ones. How hard is it to convert from the short to long one and back again?

the 81-85 transmissions are a couple inches shorter than the 79-80 transmissions.
