Question transmission noise

I purchased a 100.00 1984 GS The engine runs great and the body is good but I have one heck of a transmission noise when I let out the clutch. It makes the noise in 1, 2, 3 and 5 . Would it be the main bearing?. I check the fluid level and it was down by a quart, filling it did not help the noise go away.

If the transmission is shot I have an chance of getting one from a 83, are they interchangeable?

pretty sure they are interchangable. That noise is maybe clutch related? throw out bearing? I'm not a tranny expert

That noise sounds like the tranny bearings. I had a howl in those gears (4th and reverse are different). Since the tranny was out to put in a new clutch I had 'em replace all the bearings too, and noise gone.

I've never done bearings in a trany, is this a big job? Are there any special tools needed. I'm trying to decide if I should rebuild or get one form the wrecker that I do not no much about.

I had a shop do it, for the warranty etc. The labour was dirt cheap since the tranny was already out. The bearings are pricey though.

instead of getting a rebuilt tranny, just have 'em change the bearings in your own tranny. That way the drivetrain numbers will still match and you'll know you've a tranny good for quite a bit of mileage.

Wind... Plus the muffled voice of the Grim Repear whispering in your ear!

Unless were talking about on a track here.

Ho about if you hear a metalic clinking sound when you excelerate? Mine is a 90TII w/ 116k on the tranny. I'm already getting a replacement tranny, but I just wanted to know so I could guesstimate the cost of a rebuild on the original one. I want to put it back in later so that I don't have to worry. I'll keep the other for a spare.
