Transmission: I need a 40mm lock nut for my 85' gsl-se tranny.

Hey there-

I am rebuilding my tranny and can't seam to find parts. One part is this 40mm lock nut on the rear of the tranny....first off, it's a bitch to get off, secondly I can't seem to find one ANYWHERE! Any hints? I also would like to know if anyone knows where I can get new gears. The sincs. are fine but the actuall gear (2nd and reverse) are chewed up. Is it better to just scrap the whole damn thing and purchase another tranny from a later model and can that bolt up to my engine and driveline? I know, I know, a lot of questions you were not really wanting to answer; but I have to get this stupid thing back together. No, and I mean NO tranny shop in town will touch it along with mazda themselves. What a crock. hope to hear from anyone soon. Thanks in advance. I have always appreciated everyone's help on this page.

Justin the trannyless idiot.

Search the net. I found a used 84 trans for $100. + $50 shipping. Bolted it in and it works great.

Why not reuse the nut? Its staked ya know. I hope you bent out the staked in part before removing it. How did you get it out? I had to make a socket for it. Mazda sells the parts. I got mine from Mazdacomp (cheaper). It'd prolly be cheaper to get another tranny though. You can use any FC transmission I think, or any 84-85 transmission. Check Felix's page to be sure.

I have a spare 5 speed from an 86 that had worn parts- would come out of gear according to previous owner. $50 if you pick up. I'm 40 miles east of I75 near Macon. I understand that the shifter is in a different location than FB but the FB shifter tailpiece will bolt up in its place. Call my cell 678-246-9085. I'll be doing an engine swap this weekend. Trans is already out.
