The 79 and 80 transmissions are a little shorter than the 81-85 trannies. It will bolt up to your engine ok but you will have to do a little modification where the shifter enters the car. the 83 will be a couple of inches longer. You would be better off finding a tranny from a 79 or another 80 model.

Isn't the difference just the tailshaft part? And those are interchangeable.

actually, the transmission itself is the same length. the only external difference being that the post '81 transmissions have a remote shifter, (sits closer to you) and the 79-80 tranny is direct shift. The tail shafts arent completly compatable, something about the shifter forks being shaped differently. Somone did a write up on it a while back. Was it peejay? i forget.

Only on the very late production '80.

Cutting up the floor of an '80 to put in a weaker transmission with awful shifter placement is sacrilege.
