Is it the transmission?

Hey guys need help in trying to figure out if my tranny is going. The car makes a high pitched sqeaky noise (much like a sqeaky wheel) when I put it in reverse and also when I let off the gas in 1st gear. The thing is that it only does this noise when I am letting off my foot from the gas pedal - however when I am driving and engaging the gas pedal - the noise stops completly? - Tranny currently has RedLine Synthetic in it.

Sorry, but what kind of RX 7 do you have? SE or regular?

FI or carbed is what I'm getting at. I don't know much about trannies, but. . . . doesn't sound like tranny to me.

Does it go away if you ride the brakes? Could just be a brake dragging...

It's an 85 GSL (carb), definetly not the brakes as it makes the noise whether they are engaged or disingaged. I also noticed that the sound goes away when I engage the clutch - that's the main reason I believe it's the tranny. I have RedLine synthetic on it 80w-90, I noticed that it was a lot thinner than the valvoline 80w-90 I had on it when changing oils. Could this be a factor?

I have the exact same symptom. Although I think mine is worse because it does it in all gears (except maybe 5th..maybe I can't hear it going that fast) when I let off the gas. Also does it when I let the clutch out slow. It definitely has soemething to do with the drivetrain. I was thinking throwout bearing as well. I figure I'll just drive it till something breaks or I have the time to pull the clutch apart. It's been doing this for the entire 8 months I've owned the car. Mine is an '80.
My main concern is what is the worst than can happen if you let it go and it is the throwout bearing?
