another update, i went to an autox last yesterday with the tt (trick, not twin turbo, lol) and again, nothing but good thing to say, WAY smoother decel, great idle, wonderful all around...we should separate posts in here, let's ONLY discuss the trick in this thread so we don't get confused...

I just got mine in the mail today! Will be installing it this weekend and will post my results, I can't wait.

The unit itself looks excellent. Thanks again Kent for doing this for us!

well ****, got the msd on there today... i am confused. it did make a noticeable difference, but really only in cruising, idle, and half throttle/ low boost. full boost is way too rich now. HOW? i have NO CLUUUUEEEEE. hell, everything seems to be richer. here's one reason to maybe why: i am forced to run alot less timing.... i was with just the 2gcdfis as well. which = the suck becuse i have a locked distributor. it's sooo retarded now. tomorrow i'm going to switch it over to the distributor and run the msd thru that. that should allow me to go back to the timing i was originally at and i'll know for sure what difference the msd can really make.

altho.... when i was at that half throttle/low boost it did pull hard as a **** but couldnt floor it because it would dive down under 10:1 afr's. and not even the msd can punch thru that.

I just finish doing my timing and my leading was off a bit and when I fix that my trailing when off a bit so I fix that as well and now they both are line up. Now time to get some SeaFoam to add to my car and see if I can clean up the system well.

Guys, I am going to put together a write-up for the simple version of the circuit in a few days. Just need to finish up this conference and move into my apartment. This way, you guys can try the "trick" without waiting. You could then switch over to the auto-switching unit when some get built.

well, i went back to the distirubtor with the msd. i'm sure this mod would be more efficient if i had fuel injection... but with the msd it actually drives like a fuel injected car now. really burns the 10.5:1 afr's no problem hahaha woooot!

What's the cost of the full MSD setup? No, I'm not looking to upgrade. It would be nice to get a decent comparison of the two systems though. But unless the MSD has some kind of wild magic to it, I don't see any room for improvement over the TT. Certainly not when you consider the price difference. We need to get someone on a dyno though.

well, i got the msd box for 50 bucks locally. it was sent off to msd and got checked over and tested and what not. came off a drag car. a local shop here carry's used ones all the time. i still do not understand why my car acted the way it did with the direct fire (2gcdfis). i had to back out the timing sooo much. and even when i didn't and just boosted a little it was lagging in comparison to how it is at this moment. seriously with the msd running to the cap on the leading only so far... it drives like a fuel injected boosted car. and that is saying more than alot, because anyone who's boosted a stock 12a with a nikki knows what i mean. i got it dialed in, but spark plays suuuch a huge role and now i truly understand this i can cruise around off boost with the locked dizzy and it feels like it's stock, then stab the throttle a bit, make some boost and go thru the gears like nothing. then WOT is just stupid. i am just not seeing how anything besides an ignition box could duplicate the amount of juice going to my plugs.

Received the TRICK and finally was able to locate a Coil-Pack...'Latin's" setup looks great... but I am having a problem finding a suitable location for the coil on an SE...it is really packed tight in there. It looks as though I'll have to fabricate a brackt to mount it ....somewhere...suggestions are welcome.
Thanks Kent that is some nice work....

could you not put it on the driver side shock tower?

Well, the A/C and PS are in the way on the SE. I disconnected the AC belt and moved the compressor all the way in. I then mounted (just barely fits) the coil on the driver strut tower. It is really hard to find a mounting spot on that side of the bay on the SE (or any model with AC and PS). Maybe separating the coil from the ignitor would be a good idea or possibly a bracket of some sort.

Yea it was easy for me not having AC and PS. However, I moved the fuseble box around and remove a piece of metal that was holding the two coil wires that go to the rotors in order to place the fuseble box in place for the metal and put the 2nd Gen ignitor on the tower. That is the only way I could have done it. Hopefully will fabricate some kind of supporter out of that piece of metal, so I can place the 2nd Gen ignitor better. For now is holding good and I will be going over the wires a bit better now that I know how my set up will be is time to experiement with the bay.

It suck having the emission controller crap in the way though, I would love ot have a clean bay but lets see.

Question on the black wire on the 2nd Gen Ignitor. Can you put a shift light to it?

Thanks , appreciate the input..
GSL-SE Addict...When you moved the A/C inward did you then put a smaller belt on or just not have the A/C?

Latin.....Moving that bracket looks like the only way for now and I'll try to do like GSL-SE Addict said and seperate the two pieces....they may fit where that bracket is.

I am pretty sure you could put a shift light on the black wire, but there isn't much reason to use it over the negative terminal of the trailing coil. It does however produce the correct signal for a tach, shift light, rpm activation switch (hehehe), etc. Just set the device to 4 cyl mode and go.

I have the AC disconnected for now until I can setup something different. Works for the time being.

I'm pretty sure I've got it. I need to make a bracket. I'll get a few pics by Monday or Tuesday....and it fits with plenty of room and little or no mod from stock = A/C can be used.

Exactly what I'm doing for mounting the 2nd gen coil assembly. Those strut tower bolts are greate for hanging stuff from :-)

Well, I hit the local Radio Shack yesterday to start picking up parts for this. Did you know that Radio Shack sucks for components? I got the transistors, the LEDs, and the capacitor. The only way to get the right resistors is to buy a pack of 500 mixed. The ICs are not even available through them and apparently have to be ordered unless I can find a local distributor. The voltage regulator was there, too, but all in all it's very disappointing. While I am currently unemployed, I thought it would be cool to make a few of these things, but if I have to order parts it will take weeks to complete. If anyone has any ideas, I'm open to them.

Somewhere in this posting, Kent said that Radio shack was not a good source. Digikey is the supplier you want to look up. They have enough parts to build almost anything electronic. Small electronic parts like resistors, diodes and what not all benefit from economies of scale, so the more you buy the cheaper it gets.

Yes, actually- and I also remember when they didn't!

Also remember when the '50-in-1' project kits that you'd make things using jumper wires were still around... the new ones just aren't nearly as cool. So annoying to even think about going in to one anymore... Luckily there are a few old-school electronics component places around (Los Angeles) where you still can get one-offs and actually useful advice.

Heh... sorry, had to vent.
