Thanks for the input guys. I will go ahead and put them on the left as default and put them on the other side for those who request it. I'll be interested to see how it compares to the MSD as well. Even if it wasn't better than MSD performance wise, it sure beats the MSD in terms of cost and space required for install. speckamp: Are you running a single MSD through the cap or are you firing two leading coils with either one or two MSDs?

Hey Kent are you still able to see straight after all that drilling and soldering?

Not really. I am doing some more boards tonight. I changed the design slightly. Having that copper ground plan caused some problems etching and soldering (the solder wants to stick to any exposed copper). I am not just using trace. I made the traces wider as well as the pads for all the pins. This makes the drilling and soldering easier. I cut out the additional two transitiors for the other outputs. There just wasn't room for them without the copper ground plane. This doesn't matter since we are really just interested in the auto-switching circuit.

The guy I work with gave me over 1 gallon of etchant, so I should be good to go there.

For the guys that haven't sent payment yet, paypal would probably be best. Check or MO is okay, but there may be a delay since I am moving on Monday (visiting family and shipping circuits ). I am having the mail forwarded to where I will be, but who knows how much delay there may be. I know that probably some people are waiting for the circuits to be done before payment. This is okay. I understand. There just isn't much time left if you want to mail payment.

I keep you guys informed. I am hoping to have a batch of circuits ship Saturday (hopefully like 12 or so). We will see how the assembly goes. Drilling is the worse part. The bits break easily and there are so many tiny hole to drill. The assembly is the easiest part. Thanks for being patient, guys.

Congratulations on the PhD! I'm still pretty new to these boards but this sounds like an excellent mod for my '85 GSL. I am going to PM you for payment details (hopefully you have some of these are still available).

Kent:
At the moment I've got a MSD-6A firing 2 coils for the leading and stock on trailing through the cap.
This isn't excactly the way I wanted to set things up, but I fried the leading ignitor running dual coil on the leading off the single stock ignitor and only had the MSD on hand to replace it

The plan (since my 2g coil showed up today!) is to use "the trick" on leading w/ the 2g coil and throw the MSD onto trailing through the cap so I can get a stable RPM trigger for the Megasquirt project I've been working on (random spikes to an indicated 9800RPM can't be good). I'm not too worried about burning up the cap and rotor, as the trailing doesn't do a whole lot and from what I'm hearing in this thread "the trick" should improve things enough to make up for possible eating of the cap + rotor.

PM me your paypal info and I'll shoot you the money.

PM sent. It will be interesting to see how the trick compares to the MSD. You will have to move the trailing ignitor to the leading since you say the leading is dead. The circuit needs the first gen ignitor to trigger it.

I have 20 boards etched with the new layout. I will drill and begin assembly tonight. I am going to try to get a batch shipped tomorrow. If not, I'll ship Monday.

heh, I realized that the other day and was relieved when I discovered that I made connectors for the MSD's magnetic pickup lines as opposed to cutting and soldering the ignitor connector -- as such, I should be all good in that department. I'm really quite excited about the whole thing -- hopefully I'll get some driving time on "the trick" before the nasty weather this year.

Excellent! The paypal should be on it's way to you, let me know if there are any issues.

I have off for a week starting this coming weds. I'll hopefully have plenty of time to get the trick in and road tested I just have to find a spot for that 2g coil...it's way WAY bigger than I expected!

Yep. Got the payment. I now have 32 boards etched and 4 drilled and assembled. The assmbled ones just need to be wired and put in a box. I am going to dril a bunch more boards today and get them assembled. The assembly goes real nice. Once you get pass the etching and drilling, you really see the benefits of using a printed circuit board. Just drop everything inot place and solder. I'll try to post some pics of the built boards tonight .

The 2nd gen coil is big. I mounted mine on the strut tower, but now can't use A/C because of it. It isn't much of an issue for the guys that don't have A/C or P/S. I am still trying to find a place to put it that will work better.

Glad to hear all is going well with the build... as for the location for the second gen coil I don't have mine installed yet but I plan on relocating my battery which should mean plenty of space to tidy things up. BTW I have both PS and AC...

Anxious to see these pics

Ya, I still have my A/C and I can't seem to find a good place yet. If I do, I will let you know.

Please do, I've got A/C still as well and while I've thought about ditching it, I can't bring myself to, esp on those cool fall / spring mornings when the windows are fogged to the point of blindness without it. And I appear to have gotten too old and scared to drive looking out the sunroof...

Here are a couple pics. The first one shows 8 "trick" boards. The LEDs will be installed once the boads are separated and mounted in their boxes.

those are coming out beautiful, Kent!

Does anyone have a source (or a spare) for the connector on the 2G leading coil? The little sealed 2 pin jobby that's on there. PM me if you do, I'd rather build a proper harness for this than go all cut and splicey like I normally do

Thanks a lot guys. I try my best. Got to do a bunch more drilling today. I want to get some shipped tomorrow, but I am niot sure if I can. I need to do all the drilling and etch a couple more boards today. I am moving out of my apartment tomorrow and won't have access to the drill setup that I am using. I figure that in total I will have to drill nearly 2700 holes . I am half-way there. The assembly of the boards goes pretty quickly after drilling. With moving tomorrow and going to San Fran. Tuesday (to get VISAs), I may not be able to build/ship to Wednesday. I will do my best, though.

Wow, I thought drilling 80 small holes was a lot when I was making some ignitor heat sink plates a couple years ago.

Das prettay...Very nice work Kent. As for the connectors which ones are needed to be exact? The second gen ignitor connectors?

I can provide the connector to plug into the 1st gen ignitor. For connection between the circuit and the 2nd gen coil, I cut off the 2nd gen connector and used bullet connectors instead. If you can find the other end to the 2nd gen coil, that may be better. However, the 2nd gen has power and signal coming into the plug. The circuit will provide the signal, but the power will have to be wired separately.

Currently, I have 28 boards in the assembly stage. The remaining 12 are going to be drilled tonight.

gsl-se addict: PLEASE POST PAYPAL ADDRESS AND HOW MUCH TO SEND YOU. You are certainly an excellent engineer, physicist and PhD guy. But you need someone to help you with marketing. DO NOT BE AFRAID LET US KNOW THE PRICE AND WHERE TO SEND THE MONEY. When asked before about this several times YOU DID NOT RESPOND.

You need to respond now and let us all know. Once we have the paypal address we can send the money, and also let you know the shipping address!!!!

NOW PLEASE RESPOND to this request! Otherwise I am afraid there is going to be unhappy folks on the receiving end (they did not know where to pay) as well as you who will get stuck with alot of boards unsold!!!

"You're doing a helluva job gsl-se addict"!! But there is just one more item----getting you paid!

Hi. Actually, when people asked, I responded to trhem via pm. I'll send you a pm about it as well. It is more work this way, but I am trying not to violate forum rules. They don't allow advertising of a product (if you sell more than one). I wish I could do a "Circuit for sale" thread with my paypal address, but I can't. Just trying to play by the rules. I am doing this more as a service than to make money, but the rules are the same either way. Sorry for the confusion.

So everyone, PM me if you haven't already, to exchange information. I am good about responding to PMs and you don't have to worry about "bothering" me by sending a message. I enjoy reading and responding to whatever questions you may have.

I will also contact people who were interested but have not responded back when they are all ready to ship. I know some are probably waiting until they are reading before putting money down, while others probably don't check the forum often.

Thanks guys.

Kent
