tranny symptoms

My transmission has been making weird sounds for a while, I just never got around to trying to fix it. Its a 12A transmission. There are 2 main symptoms. One is if the car is in neutral and running, and i have the clutch engaged, the tranny makes a sort of rattling sound. If I push the clutch in, the noise stops. The other symptom is that if I push the clutch in when the car is moving and try to put it in first, it's very resistant and when I do get it in after some forcefulness, it makes a spinning/whining noise. However, If I do the same thing when the car is NOT moving, it doesn't give me any trouble.

Symptom #1- ThrowOut Bearing
Symptom #2- these OLD transmissions don't really like being thrown into 1st gear while in motion.. let alone 10-15 mph.... Put some Redline in there and you prolly just have to live that...or get it rebuilt.

hope that helps

If you get the noise only in Neutral (w/clutch in) and it goes away when you put it in gear, it most likely is the pilot bearing which will also make shifting difficult, especially 1st and reverse. If it makes the noise in all gears and neutral (at idle) w/ clutch in, chances are it's the throw out.

If it makes noise in every gear but 4th (which is direct) then it's a shaft bearing.

it doesnt make any noise with the clutch in so i guess that would make it the pilot bearing. I'm pulling my engine for a basic rebuild (new gaskets and super cleaning), ill just take the tranny out too and fix it. and ill add some redline too. thanks guys .
