tranny questions

i have a tranny laying around and a friend of mine wants to buy it and install it in his 2nd gen. it's a 12a tranny, unknown year, i've never used it, it came with my car when i bought it as far as i know it's in good condition it'll go into every gear and it spins like it should. i've been doing a bit of research on this, and so far i know he's gonna have to get the tail end from his 2nd gen tranny and put it on this one, so that the gear **** and the mount will be correct, also to save some of the money he can change the bell housing so that he can use the 2nd gen starter/flywheel, clutch etc....how about the driveshaft? is that ok, or will he need to get a custom driveshaft? ...hmmm..how about speedo cable?

here's some tranny pics, if someone can help me identify the year range it'll be great, it's a bit different from the one in my 85 so i'm guessing it's a bit older than that lol

needs a bit of cleaning and stuff but i think it's in good condition..also could you tell me about how much this tranny would be worth thanks.

its an 81-83 trans.. the clutch fork boot gives it away. tell your friend to buy the correct trans for his car and not to monkey around trying to put a 12A trans in an FC.

There are no separate bell housings on any 1st gens period.

As long as this is not a 2nd gen turbo vehicle that he wants to put the 12a trans in there is no problem.

You can use the 2nd gen tail shaft housing on the 12a transmission.
The drive shaft will work with no problem.
The starter will also bolt right up from the 2nd gen.
The 2nd gen speedo cable will work fine also

Everything is an easy swap on this.

thank you , i read somewhere on the 2nd gen section that you could change the bell housing on some..oh well learn something new everyday ...so the 2nd gen starter will work on the 12a tranny?, don't you have to change the flywheel in order to install this tranny? i thought the 2nd gen and 1st gen starters were different ..and no it's not a turbo FC...also, how much do you think i can ask for it? i just wanna get a rough estimate of how much it's worth

in a way i know the tranny life will be shorter, but as a quick fix and as long as he takes care of it and maintain it properly it'll last quite a while, besides he'll have somewhat of a better low end pull
