Question tranny options for a 79 gs

hey guys
i think it's time my rex got a new transmission, it's making funky noises at me... however, i know that a little modification is required for inserting anything beyond a 80 tranny, but how much is it? i was thinking about getting a turbo 2 tranny, but as far as the tranny housing is concerned, is changing out that little plate by the shifter enough or is more serious surgery required to get anything else in there? any helpful hints from people who've done it already? thanks

I just helped put an -SE tranny in a friends 80. Everything is basically the same except the tail housing. Using the 80 tailhousing also means the forks that actuate the shifter rods from the -SE tranny wont work. The 79and early 80's had shifter forks that bolted on, while the later trannys used roll pins. We used shifter forks from an old Mazda B2000 tranny I had laying around that worked fine, but you can buy the correct ones from Mazda still. They are the ones from the LATE 80's tranny. PM JDuncan, he has the Mazda part #'s still.
