Tranny Noise

In my 1983 gsl, in all gears except 4th, the tranny "whines" pretty loud. I don't know if this is normal or if there is something wrong. I also changed the fluid too but it didn't seem to make much of a difference. It only has 94,000 on it too. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Chris G.

Welcome to the forum Chris.
Is the noise there at idle? Normally this is the front countershaft bearing which is most common on the 1st gens on an original trans. They corrected that with the repalcement bearing. The reason there is no noise in 4th is because of a 1 to 1 ratio wheere the driveshaft and trans are turning at the same speed, less load.

This noise happens throughout all the gears at all RPM's. My dad said it might need a rebuild cause the bearings might be worn out. I don't know if i really want to rebuild a tranny though. Sounds kind of hard and expensive.

You just stated before that there is no noise in 4th? Also agian is the noise there at idle and
in neutral when you rev it up. If so more than likely it does not need a complete rebuild just the front countershaft bearing. This can be replace by seperating the casing at the front and taking it down to a trans shop and having them pull the bearing off and replacing just that one.

You need a new tranny. That's typical when the bearings take a dump. Every gear but 4th will make a noise. Check out Mazdatrix's website on tranny diagnosis:

http://www.mazdatrix.com/g2.htm

Read the 5th symptom.

Redline

Try putting in some Redline synthetic - it does wonders for gear noises. If that fails - then it looks like you need a new tranny or rebuild.
