tranny fluid?
I have read in many places that atf will help with flooded motors. What does atf do? My 83 with a 12a doesnt start and its got spark and gas. I'm assuming its flooded. I am going to try to unflooded but before I do I really wanna know what putting atf in the carb really does. Every seems to just say it works but i havent found someone that knows why.

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
If it is flooded, don't pump the throttle - hold it open. Unless you've done a wondrous job of flooding it, holding it at 1/4 - 1/2 throttle should get it to fire up fairly quickly after it has un-flooded itself.
ATF also works magic as a mosquito fogger.

ATF is often used to clean up an old engine.Over time, carbon builds up in the seal grooves and can hurt compression because the seals cant work in and out.ATF has a lot of detergents in it.Soaking the internal components in ATF for a day or 2 will soften the carbon and help unstick the seals.Usually a couple capfulls per rotor will do,rotate the engine with the starter a few times, and let sit.
For deflooding, any oil will help build compression and possibley start the engine up.The oil helps the seals to reseal against the rotor housings, bumping compression. When flooded, the excess liquid gasoline washes the oil film off the surfaces, which hurts compression and makes starting the engine tough.
Best way to unflood a rotary is too pull the plugs, crank the engine to force all the liquid gas out, pour an ounce or two of oil down the carb, replace the plugs, and restart. On EFI cars, you have to squirt the oil into the chambers through the leading plug holes.
