Tranny in (finally)

a while ago I asked if the tranny from an 80 RX-7 would fit on an 85. The answer was yes, with cutting. I finally got it in. It bolts up nicely but the shifter location is too far foreward. so The body and part of the dash need to be trimmed. I also needed to put pedals in the car; I took them from the same 80 parts car, only they don't fit. I wish I would have realised this before taking them out, as it did take a fair amount of time. Anyway, i still need to figure something else out for that... Also, I realised another thing: the driveshafts are different, and the driveshat will not bolt up. the 85 has LSD, so I was thinking of taking out the piece where it bolts to on the diff, and swapping it, if the splines are the same. I need a 1" socket to do this though, which won't be as hard to find as the 2 1/8" socket I needed for the flywheel I was wondering if anyone knew if they are the same or not.

Also, i just purchased an 82-3? from a parts yard, I took the starter from it and I may take the pedals, if they match up . Anyway, I heard that the car was running a while back, so naturally, i tried to start it. I turn the key, and the engine just BARELY moves, so i think, hmm, must be locked, no problem, just turn the bolt on the front of the engine, easy, right? WRONG. The only thing that happened was the socket broke. so I thought, damn she's stuck, maybe if I push it down a hill and pop it into... So much for this Idea, the tires just locked up in the gravel, so I took the starter out, and that was it, is there something else i could have tried? Why is the engine so locked up? It has only been sitting for around1 year; I have another that has been sitting for 2 and I turn it over with one hand, what could be wrong? I would like to get this car started sometime to assure myself that I have an extra spare engine just to feel safe, anything else i might try?

The same thing happened to my '87 after sitting for about a year. It was a bitch to break loose but I did it by putting it in 5th gear and pushing it back and forth with a friend. I tried 1st gear but it wouldn't budge (wouldn't budge with a wrench either). I think the taller gear helped for some reason. Wouldn't hurt.

I got a similar story, about 4 years ago I was at a salvage yard. I seen a 1982 RX GSL with 86K miles and the motor was in it, you thinking what Im thinking ? Maybe I can get me some good rotors and rotor housing. But when I tried to move it I broke a damn 3/4" socket. (trying to turn front pulley) I was like ****! Someone had bought the carb off it :o So I assume it had rained in it So I asked the guy how much If I take the motor, I was bored and figure I get something useful out of it... I bought the motor for $25, took it home disassembled it, and this motor was cherry! I mean it was in great shape with the exception of all the seals being stuck into position, with wasnt easy to extact. But rotor housings had no groves or scoring. The rotors were great shaope with the exception of carbon buildup. Even the apex seals spec'ed out above mazda normal. So I said what the hell bought a gasket and o ring kit, from mazdatrix ($100) .. Put this thing together after cleaning the crap outta it. And put it in my 1980 RX 7... This thing finally blew up last month. I put somewhere around 100k on it. And I swear, wasnt 1 mile of it easy, I tried to blow it up. The moral of the story even the hopeless can be profitable LOL

**** I got carried away there... sorry, well on my 1980 RX I put a rearend outta an 85 in it, all I did was swap the thing the driveshaft bolts to (just took the 85 one off and put the 80 one on ) . Mazdatrix used to have a writeup on cross referencing tranys and diff. in one of there older catalogs. Ill see If i can find it

Just out of curiosity, cant you take that tunnel shifter off the 80 trans and put the 81 above shifter. I got an 80 trans in tha garage, I thought I wonder that when I took the 80 one out and put the 83 or whatever year it was in And yes I had to cut the **** outta stuff, I trimed back about 2 inches. I just changed the dash and console and everything to an 83 dash Took a trip to the local rubber and gaskey place and said I need this only 2 inches longer lol Which looked better anyways...
